Clinical Research Career Entry Posts


The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme is an internationally renowned health research Programme that is committed to carrying out high quality research on health issues affecting Kenya and Africa in general and to building research capacity in the East African Region. 
Our clinical research aims to improve understanding of the aetiology, burden and risk factors for major diseases, optimise clinical care, develop and test interventions, and influence national and international policy and practice. 
Currently, several important clinical trials are going on alongside observational studies, quality and implementation of care studies, and epidemiological, pathophysiological, immunological and microbiological projects.
 
Three clinical research career entry posts are available in the areas listed below.
 
Based in Kilifi:
  • Child health: severe malnutrition, the severely ill child, severe anaemia, sickle cell disease, newborn health, epilepsy, stroke, mental health disorders.
  • Adult health: stroke, mental health disorders, chronic respiratory disease, meningoencephalitis, HIV infection dynamics, emergency obstetric management.
Based in Nairobi:
  • Quality and safety of care in either neonatology or surgery.
These positions offer an opportunity to work with experienced scientists in a highly dynamic research
environment and will suit individuals wishing to pursue a long term career in research as a clinician scientist.
 
Post-holders will work on existing research projects, undertake clinical duties, and be exposed to a strong research environment including a wide range of seminars and journals clubs, and mentorship in research methodology in order to develop a strong scientific project and fellowship proposal
 
The positions are open to East African clinicians with MMed training and are for two years nonrenewable.
 
However, during this period the post-holders will be expected to develop and submit applications for external funding to support their PhD training or further research if they already have a PhD. 
If funding is awarded the holder’s contract will be extended to the end of the awarded grant period.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate in information systems or related discipline

Job Specification- Business Analyst
  • Liaising with users of systems to identify changes that are necessary for the systems to continue supporting the business strategy.
  • Providing robust analysis and critique to the identified changes before documenting them into formal systems requirement specifications that can be used to design, develop (acquire) and implement an appropriate solution that will address the intended business need while factoring seamless integration with existing solutions for the overall fit.
  • Ensures clear communication of required changes and solutions proposed to stakeholders.
  • Apply best practices and standards in solution design and project executions for consistent delivery of quality solutions within the defined scope, budget and time.
  • Training users and other team members on new information system solutions.
  • Ensures that solutions developed are properly tested by developing comprehensive test plans.
  • Must be able to run a project from initiation to closure and provide relevant documentation for entire project implementation process
  • Ensures that problems (issues) identified during implementations are reported, tracked, and resolved in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Working with the other business analysts to implement and maintain enterprise-wide data warehouse solution for consolidated corporate reporting and analytics.

Job Summary

Jacaranda is seeking a Data Coordinator to report to our Finance and Impact Evaluation Director. 
This individual will work closely with the director and our clinical staff to design and maintain a robust data management system. 
This includes creating and entering data in electronic databases to track:
  • Client contact and demographic information
  • Client health outcomes, medical records and visits to our in- and out-patient facilities
  • Marketing information (calls, campaigns or surveys directed to our clients)
  • HR information
  • Financial information (costs associated to all marketing, clinical or other operations)
We are looking for an intelligent, proactive, and flexible individual with experience managing large databases, project management skills and great attention to detail.

Responsibilities
  • Design the data management system to track operational and financial indicators
  • Enter data into the electronic management system
  • Audit the quality of the data
  • Re-enter data as necessary and change data entry processes to improve data quality
  • Create and supervise processes of tracking and data entry by frontline staff (receptionists, nurses)
  • Create data reports to be presented to internal and external audiences
  • Perform basic administration of Jacaranda IT resources
  • Attend to other administrative duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ proven experience managing large databases; experience in a health care setting is a definite plus, but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Google products in particular Excel; familiarity with database management programs (e.g. Access) is a plus, but not required.
  • Applicant to be tested on practical Excel applications during the interview
  • High attention to detail and analytical skills required
  • Proactive, self-starter and team-oriented;  able to multi-task effectively and manage competing priorities in a typical start-up environment
  • Dependable and upholding highest level of honesty and confidentiality
