Radiographer

Our client a re-known Hospital in Nairobi targeting the urban poor communities is in the process of increasing its service delivery effectiveness. 
This has necessitated the need to urgently hire a Radiographer whose details are described below.

Vacant Position: Radiographer
 
Reporting: Medical Officer in-charge
 

Liaison: Doctors, Nurses, Clinical Officers, Matron, All staff

Job Summary: The purpose of this position is to undertake initial patient evaluation and testing, provide diagnostic and evidentiary data for physicians by capturing images of organs, bone, and tissue for patient diagnosis.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic imaging examinations like x rays, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and mammography as may be required.
  • Produce x-ray films (radiographs) of parts of the human body for use in diagnosing medical problems.
  • Prepare patients for radiologic examinations by explaining the procedure such as drinking water before ultrasound, removing jewelry and other articles through which x-rays cannot pass and positioning patients so that the parts of the body can be appropriately radiographed.
  • Follow physicians' and radiologist’s orders precisely and conform to regulations concerning the use of radiation to protect self, the patients, and other coworkers from unnecessary exposure.
  • Prepare work-schedules; evaluate purchases of equipment, and general management of the radiology department.
  • Perform more complex imaging procedures when performing fluoroscopes, e.g. radiologic technologists prepare a solution for the patient to drink, allowing the radiologist to see soft tissues in the body.
  • Ensure radiation safety measures and protection devices are used and observed to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff.
  • Collaborate with other radiology technicians in designing SOPs for the department.
  • Collaborate with medical team members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct angiography or special vascular procedures.
  • Ensure scheduled maintenance and minor emergency repairs on radiographic equipment
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of radiography equipment and resources & ensure adequate stock levels are maintained while adhering to procedures for the use and procurement of supplies.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the economical use of resources and contribute to the overall control of the departmental budget by adhering to procedures for the use and procurement of supplies.
  • Manage own work load ensuring most effective use of time
  • Communicate effectively at all times and maintain a harmonious working environment.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and care of patients’ records.
  • Assist in ensuring the availability of resources for patient care.
  • Assess the needs of patients and relatives and provide them with information as requested.
Qualification, Competencies Required
  • Performing diagnostic imaging examinations like x rays, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and mammography as may be required.

  • Preventing unnecessary exposure to radiation, those workers and visitors surrounding the exposed area with radiation protection devices, such as lead shields, or limit the size of the x-ray beam.
  • Following physicians' and radiologist orders precisely and conform to regulations concerning the use of radiation to protect themselves, their patients, and their coworkers from unnecessary exposure.
  • Keeping patient records and adjusting and maintaining equipments used in the radiology department.
  • Using radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff.
  • Collaborating with other radiology technicians in designing SOPs for the department
  • Collaborating with medical team members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct angiography or special vascular procedures.
  • Perform any other duties as may be required by the hospital/immediate supervisor
Qualification, Competencies Required
  • Have a diploma in medical imaging from KMTC.
  •  A higher diploma in sonography is an added advantage
  • Have an experience of not less than two years in a busy centre in ultra sound
  • Be registered by the radiation protection Board
  • Have a current valid private practice license
  • Be able to do and report ultrasounds.
  • Highly experienced in radiographing covering a wide range of clinical examinations and applications.
  • High level of confidentiality, discretion and trustworthiness
  • Excellent listening, communication, interpersonal skills
  • Ability to assess and implement highly specialist imaging procedures, adapting technique and prioritise imaging if / and when required
  • A degree of physical dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills required for positioning of or handling patients 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to adopt and to modify technique if required in difficult situations.
  • Ability to juggle many priorities at one time, whilst remaining calm

Reporting: Medical Officer in-Charge
 

Liaison: Medical Doctors, Clinical officers, Nurses, Radiology and Records team, Pharmacy

Job Summary: The position is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing and assuming responsibility and accountability for the provision of efficient, speedy, and accurate laboratory services (tests and procedures) to assist in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients. 
It is also responsible for investigation of new procedures, and quality control of laboratory services. 
Under the general guidance of the Medical Officer in-charge, the incumbent will ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory guidelines, standards and protocols relating to laboratory services.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
General Management     
  • Provide effective management to the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.
  • Provide line management and professional leadership to the laboratory services team, and ensure that effective and efficient administrative support is provided for laboratory services.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, operating/administrative procedures, and systems established for the laboratory. 
  • Ensure delivery of comprehensive and good quality laboratory services to patients by all laboratory staff.
  • Ensure effective coordination with the clinical services team for effective management of patient treatment process.
  • Ensure that all laboratory staff contributes to maintenance of a safe environment, comply with infection control standards, keep good sanitation, and effective management of waste disposal.
  • Ensure that laboratory is supplied with adequate supplies and consumables to facilitate its service delivery effectively.
  • Ensure that laboratory staffs maintain effective client service. 
  • Ensure that data from the laboratory is handled confidentially at all times.
  • Promote initiatives that support delivery of quality laboratory services by the Hospital.
  • Ensure that equipment, machines, and tools being used for laboratory services are in working and serviceable condition and are kept clean and tidy at all times.
  • Facilitate regular departmental team meetings to promote communication and information sharing, discuss performance standards and compliance, staffing, monitor general trends in patient complaints and other concerns and/or developments.
  • Ensure that laboratory staff understand and promote emergency and evacuation procedures in line with relevant regulations and/or requirements.
  • Draw up, manage and monitor the budget for Laboratory Department in consultation with the Medical Officer in-Charge and the Administrator.  
  • Conduct analysis, interpret and provide reports on specimens as required by the clinical staff.   Establish systems that ensure quality control/assurance and accuracy of laboratory results
  • Conduct outreach laboratory services to support the Hospital’s medical outreach activities
  • Promote a work environment that promotes harmonious work relationships, team work and nurture and keep a committed and highly motivated laboratory staff.
  • Manage the orientation and induction of new laboratory staff.
  • Maintain an effective performance management process for laboratory staff.  
  • Identify and deal with issues of poor performance, complaints, grievances and disciplinary
  • actions in accordance with the Hospital’s human resource policies and procedures.
  • Foster teamwork among supervised staff and with staff from other units/departments in the Hospital.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • KCSE with a minimum grade C, Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • At least four (4) years’ experience in a similar position
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologist and Technicians Board.
  • MUST be diligent, honest and responsible
  • High level of integrity and a professional attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be a good team player
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to details, and high level of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills and ability to maintain high morale among staff
  • Good spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
  • Good colour and form perception (to study blood cells, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of computer application packages
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Job Summary: The incumbent will be responsible for providing healthcare services to ear, nose and throat patients in the hospital

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Diagnosis and treatment diseases of ear, nose, and throat
  • Determine nature and extent of disorder, prescribe and/ or administer medications
  • Consult with patients to determine the appropriate course of treatment
  • Keep inventory and attention to proper care & maintenance of special equipment’s within the ENT Outpatient facility.
  • Support specialised ENT surgical services and services delivery in the surgery department of the hospital ensuring that they meet the expected standards of quality, quantity and compliance
  • Coordinate ENT surgery referral services within and within and without the hospital according to the ENT surgery services needs in collaboration with other hospital sections and departments and within the framework of the hospital and national referral policies
  • Supervise ENT staff together with their services, in the ENT department of the hospital to ensure that they offer timely ENT services within the expected standards of quantity and quantity complying with the established ethics and regulations
  • Ensure and coordinate continuous training and development of ENT staff for their effective and efficient performance and productivity
  • Coordinate and provide ENT research and training within the ENT department of the hospital
  • Offer specialised ENT surgery services’ advice to the hospital executive and other sections/departments and the general public in the appropriate media
  • Work with other medical specialists to solve single or multiple medical issue (s) or perform extensive surgery, when required in the hospital
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and achievement of the ENT services, research and training programs in the hospital, prepare and disseminate periodic reports appropriately.
Qualification, Competencies Required
  • Higher Diploma in ENT from a recognised institution

HIV Service Delivery Support Activity (HSDSA) Cluster 1 is a USAID funded project covering Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira counties. 
The purpose of this project is to provide key clinical support to the Government of Kenya national HIV response with the overall goal of increasing access and coverage for HIV prevention, care and treatment services towards achieving the “90-90-90” targets.

PATH is seeking to recruit a Data Analyst who will support the HSDSA project. 
The role will 
  • oversee creation and implementation of project level data analysis plans including writing or editing SOPs and guidelines for data analysis and dissemination of results at process, output and outcome levels; 
  • ensure data quality using relevant tools and provide technical guidance at all levels including project, facility and community levels; 
  • lead data collection, entry and analysis of initiatives such as surveys, evaluations and other studies; 
  • actively participate in project data analytics and documentation activities; 
  • perform monthly and quarterly data analyses and develop data visualization dashboards; 
  • contribute to development of in-depth analysis of project data for publications, advocacy, proposal writing and presentation to various audiences as need arises; and
  • participate in data review meetings at various levels, including project level. 
The Data Analyst will be based in the Kisumu office.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

Monitoring and Evaluation:
  • Support development and implementation of project M&E plans, ensuring that the data collection, collation and analysis are clearly spelt out and understood by all stakeholders.
  • Where not provided, assist with setting up realistic and scientifically informed targets.
  • Lead the data collection, entry and analysis of initiatives such as surveys, evaluations and other studies conducted by projects.
  • Ensure data quality using existing tools and provide technical guidance at all levels including project, facility and community.
Data systems and requirements:
  • Develop a Kenya Country Data Management System that draws selected data from project databases; complete with SOPs and guidelines; collate and merge data from different data sources.
  • Set up a repository of all data generated from projects in a format that is easily accessible.
  • In collaboration with M&E teams, support development of project specific data management systems.
  • Review current data processing procedures to identify areas for improvement.
  • Where necessary, audit data needs for different projects to come up with requirements per project area.
  • Provide TA to build the capacity of project staff in database design and data management system.
Data analysis, dissemination/use:
  • Work with project teams to create data analysis plans including writing or editing SOPs and guidelines for data analysis.
  • Actively participate in HSDSA project data analytics and documentation activities.
  • Perform monthly and quarterly data analyses and develop data visualization dashboards to enable teams and stakeholders to explore, understand and use project data.
  • Assist all relevant stakeholders to make use of data to aid informed decision-making by availing datasets and analyses.
  • Contribute to development of in-depth analysis of Kenya Country Program project data for publications, advocacy, proposal writing and presentation to various audiences as need arises.
  • Participate in data review meetings at various levels, including project level.
  • Provide TA to build the capacity of project staff in data analysis, interpretation, use, reporting, and dissemination.
Other:
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the performance leader.
Required Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Bio-statistics, Social/Behavioral Sciences, Information Systems or other related field, Master’s degree in any related field is an added advantage. 5-8 years’ work experience with international development programs in HIV/AIDS, Reproductive Health, Child Survival, Nutrition, and Family Planning.
  • Five (5) years or more experience in: Monitoring and Evaluation of Project / Program level activities, data management and analysis.
  • Proficiency in a range of qualitative and quantitative analytic methods.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation, research and data management of public health programs.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical assistance on the use of data for planning and decision making.
  • Effective and efficient time management skills.
  • Excellent understanding of database design (Access, SQL)
  • Experience with data visualization software preferred (e.g. Tableau)
  • Advanced level experience with statistical software (e.g. SPSS, Stata, EpiInfo).
  • Experience with Qualitative Data Analysis software (e.g. NVIVO, Atlas.ti) desired.
  • Strong critical analysis skills and excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, MS Project, MS SharePoint, Access).
  • Experience with DHIS2, EMR, and the National HMIS system including knowledge of MOH data collection tools is strongly preferred.

PATH is seeking to recruit a Data Manager for HSDSA project who will provide leadership in routine data management operations including supporting timely data collection and entry, data quality at all data points, processing, cleaning, analysis and managing the project databases. 
Further, provide support to research data collection and analysis efforts by the project including special initiatives, outlined surveys, studies and evaluations. 
Participate in preparing for and playing a key role in monthly data review meetings; reporting in DATIM, writing donor reports and participating in dissemination forums. 
S/he will be based in the Kisumu office.
   
Specific duties and responsibilities:
  • Ensure timely data collection, entry, review and collation of project data – both from health facilities and the community.
  • Perform data cleaning and verify the authenticity and accuracy of the data before reporting to the donor.
  • Work closely with M&E and MIS teams to develop and/or review data management systems including data security, analysis plan, dissemination aids and templates.
  • Provide technical assistance to build the capacity of M&E staff in database design, development and implementation; data management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement a mentorship program for health care workers and other data handlers on use of MOH and other reporting tools.
  • Under the guidance of technical team leads, conduct in-depth and robust data analysis and presentation using appropriate software including Tableau and SPSS.
  • Develop and implement a capacity building plan for project staff in data management including analysis, use and dissemination.
  • Contribute to development of in-depth analysis of HSDSA (Cluster 1) project data for publications, advocacy, proposal writing and presentation to various audiences as need arises.
  • Participate in project led special initiatives, surveys and studies and providing technical assistance in data management and report writing.
  • Assist in writing/editing guidelines/SOPs for data entry, management and analysis.
  • Provide technical guidance in strategies for improving the quality of data from health facilities and the community, and overall data dissemination and utilization at project level.
  • Participate in data review meetings at various levels, including project level.
  • In liaison with USG strategic information mechanisms, lead in project data analytics and visualization efforts to enhance data use at project and county and sub county levels.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the performance leader.
Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, biostatistics, epidemiology, information systems or related field, and minimum of 5 years relevant experience with international development programs in HIV/AIDS, Reproductive Health, Child health, Nutrition and Family planning.Master's degree in  any related field will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of SPSS and EPI Info and/or other statistical analysis package (SAS, STATA, R).
  • Excellent understanding of database design and development, database programming (in Access, SQL).
  • Experience and skills in DHIS2 framework, EMR and National HMIS system, including knowledge of MOH data collection tools is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of data visualization and business information software such as Tableau and Power BI will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of and interpretation of key indicators in HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, family planning, maternal/child health and nutrition is essential.

PATH is seeking to recruit a Health Informatics Officer to provide technical support and supervision to ensure EMR implementation at facility level is carried out to the fullest extent possible and to the highest possible degree of quality.  
In addition the successful candidate will 
  • provide technical support and expertise, coordination and supervision of all HIV services related software design and implementation and database administration and health informatics and information systems strengthening within the assigned project area in compliance with national and donor guidelines and policies; 
  • provide technical support and supervision in collaboration with MOH CHMT and SCHMT teams in the successful planning and implementation of HIV service delivery Health Informatics related activities at facility level, including facility work planning and target setting, support supervision, technical support and reporting. 
The Health Informatics Officer will be based in Kisumu.

Specific duties and responsibilities;   
  • Health Informatics and Information Systems strengthening including co-ordination and support for implementation MOH and HSDSA Health Information Systems strengthening mainly focusing on Electronic Medical Records (EMR) platforms at facility, sub-county and county levels.
  • Provide technical support for eHealth/mHealth Systems Support and administration including provide first level support , troubleshooting, system testing, applications’ rollout, user training and providing excellent post-rollout client support via phone, internet, or in-person.
  • Lead in training and capacity building on EMR and eHealth in compliance with national protocols and guidelines and provide continuous mentorship.
  • Ensure acceptable levels of data quality and integrity as per national protocols and guidelines.
  • Provide technical support for relevant software design and implementation for HIV Service Delivery Information Systems.
  • Provide technical support and coordination for Database Administration (DBMS).
  • Provide technical support for integration of the project’s technical approaches for the achievement of successful project health informatics implementation at facility level using evidence informed, innovative and best practices.
  • Provide technical support during weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual facility performance reviews using EMR and related health informatics platforms.
  • Provide technical support for Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance interventions at facility level in collaboration with C (SC) HMT using EMR and related health informatics platforms.
  • Participate in site preparation for supportive supervision and SIMS assessments and ensure recommendations are implemented at facility level by project team in collaboration with C (SC) HMT.
  • Represent the project in health informatics technical forums at facility, sub-county and county level.
Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in health records and management sciences / statistics / information systems, IT, Informatics or other degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage, Health Informatics (or equivalent qualification) with an advanced diploma with a minimum of 5 years’ experience providing direct technical support in implementation of health informatics platforms with specific experience in HIV/TB projects,
  • Hands on experience in HIV service delivery health informatics implementation and technical coordination.
  • Proven experience and familiarity with MOH/GOK EMR and health informatics systems. Research experience, proposal and abstract writing will be a distinctive advantage.
  • Professional presentation skills.
  • Excellent computer and IT skills.
  • Excellent facilitation, mentorship, team building and coordination skills.
  • Field oriented and comfortable with a team approach to programming.

We seek to recruit a Technical Advisor, Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision (VMMC) Services who will provide technical expertise, coordination and supervision of all Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision (VMMC) activities within the HSDSA Cluster 1 project area in compliance with national and donor guidelines and policies.  
S/he will provide oversight and leadership to ensure that the VMMC Scope of Work for the HSDSA Cluster 1 project is carried out to the fullest extent possible and to the highest possible degree of quality. 
The incumbent will provide oversight and leadership in collaboration with PATH and HSDSA Cluster 1 project management teams to ensure the successful planning and implementation of VMMC activities, including work planning, budgeting, support supervision, technical support and reporting, provide representation for the HSDSA Cluster 1 project and PATH at county and national VMMC forums, meetings and conferences as may be called upon. 
This position is based in Kisumu.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Take the lead in planning, implementation and supervision of all planned VMMC activities within the project area, and ensure these activities are implemented to the highest degree of quality possible.
  • Ensure key VMMC strategies implementation through supportive supervision and capacity building modalities, dissemination of guidelines and standards and implementing quality improvement and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Provide overall technical leadership in the implementation of the VMMC service delivery component of the project.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of costed project work-plans
  • Oversee the integration of the project’s VMMC technical approaches for the achievement of successful project implementation using evidence informed, innovative and best practices
  • Provide leadership in creating and strengthening community demand creation and referral networks between facility and community ensuring there is seamless implementation of VMMC activities.
  • Take lead in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and other reports as may be required and submit these to the Senior Technical Advisor HIV Prevention in a timely manner
  • Provide leadership in weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual project performance reviews, assessing progress in an objective manner in collaboration with C (SC) HMT
  • Provide leadership for the VMMC component on Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance interventions at facility level in collaboration with C (SC) HMT.
  • Participate in the donor progress report writing, continuation application and quarterly review report writing and presentation.
  • Take lead in site preparation for supportive supervision and SIMS assessments and ensure recommendations are implemented at facility level by project team in collaboration with C (SC) HMT.
  • Support coordination with C (SC) HMT on implementation of HTS service delivery work plans.
  • Represent the project in technical forums and male circumcision taskforce meetings at sub-county, county and national level.
  • Participate in any other duties as assigned.
Required Experience
  • Clinical qualification (Registered Nurse, Registered Clinical Officer, Medical Doctor or equivalent qualification) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience providing leadership in implementation of VMMC services.
  • MPH or other master’s degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage.
  • Advanced trainings in VMMC service provision will be a distinct advantage.
  • Hands on clinical experience in VMMC service delivery and technical coordination of VMMC activities.
  • Proven experience and familiarity with MOH/GOK health systems.

PATH is seeking to recruit a Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor to provide technical leadership to the M&E team of the HSDSA project. 
S/he will support development, management and application of an AMELP (Activity Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning plan) of the project, offer technical assistance and help build capacity of the project stakeholders on health management information systems.
In addition, s/he will participate in identification and measurement of appropriate project performance indicators. 
S/he will lead the M&E team and other project implementation teams to carry out routine project monitoring in a timely manner and ensure accurate data collection, analysis, reporting of project activities and outputs and use of data for decision-making. 
With input from the project team, s/he will identify and oversee design and implementation of special studies that inform project performance and management. 
S/he will ensure assessments carried out meet quality and technical standards and that findings are appropriately shared with respective stakeholders. 
The position is based in the Kisumu office and reports to the M&E Specialist.

Specific duties and responsibilities:
  • Mentorship and capacity building of the MOH staff and project M&E staff in to improve their skills in M&E and HMIS.
  • Coordinate the gap analysis, forecasting and distribution of CBHIS/HMIS reporting tools.
  • Coordinate the implementation of project Performance Management Plan (PMP) and ensure that all indicators are routinely updated.
  • Participate in the planning, development, maintenance and training of M&E team and sub grantees on the project databases (and Management Information Systems-CIMS, tableau etc).
  • Provide technical expertise in application of appropriate project evaluation methodology and design during implementation of studies and assessments, End-term review using cost-effective methods such as Lot Quality Assessment Sampling (LQAS).
  • Provide guidance and a mechanism to ensure quality assurance is maintained at all levels of programmatic work and particularly at results level by offering technical support during SIMS, DQA and Quality of Care Assessments.
  • Contribute to the development, review and tracking of the project’s performance indicators including training data.
  • Contribute to the development of protocols, instruments (e.g. questionnaires, checklists, discussion guides and interview forms) for data collection, storage and analysis as may be needed.
  • Ensure that project performance and accountability data is collected, analyzed and disseminated on a timely basis during quarterly, semi-annual and annual reporting of results.
  • Oversee special studies that inform project performance and management including documentation.
  • Participate in Project and County M&E Technical Working Group meetings.
  • Lead efforts aimed at improving data accuracy by revision of the HSDSA monthly data summary reporting formats i.e. IPT and all training datasets.
  • Coordinate continuous updating and review of the project M&E standard operating procedures.
  • Manage and coordinate quarterly, SAPR and APR reporting processes to USG through DATIM.
Required Experience
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Biostatistics, Information Systems Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Social Sciences. Master's degree in any related field will be an added advantage.
  • At least eight years’ work experience in Health and Management Information Systems (HMIS), monitoring and evaluation of public health programs.
  • Experience in the design, management, analysis and dissemination of a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research projects.
  • Experience working with a variety of information systems and data files.
  • Knowledge of and experience working successfully with large, international, multi-donor health grantees.
  • Familiar with GIS as a user interface and reporting format with analytical software.
  • Knowledge of PEPFAR/USAID reporting requirements preferred.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a research assistant to run animal trials on feed interventions, animal productivity and greenhouse gas emissions from livestock systems.
 
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to livestock research for the developing world. 
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Responsibilities

The candidate will contribute to ongoing research projects which focus on identifying the conditions that enable and constrain East African dairy producers in adopting climate smart agriculture practices. 
The research team aims to develop specific baseline estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock and livestock related products such as manure, identify effects of livestock systems on water quality and water quantity and identify potential mitigation practices that also improve dairy/beef production in smallholder systems. 
The candidate is expected to work within an international dynamic team in ILRI’s Mazingira Centre (mazingira.ilri.org).
The position entails a significant component  of hands-on work including handling of and sampling from large and small ruminants 
The candidate will contribute to this by undertaking the following activities:
  • Planning, participation and oversight of ruminant research trials
  • To coordinate and assist in day to day running and maintenance of animal facilities
  • To collect biological samples (eg. faeces, urine, and rumen liquor), carry out greenhouse gas flux measurements from ruminants in experimental trials, under the guidance of senior project staff
  • To assist with data entry and processing (data organization, calculation of greenhouse gas fluxes from animal respiration chambers)
  • To maintain relationships with different stakeholders including farmers and farmer groups, suppliers and ILRI ancillary staff, in order to facilitate the efficient prosecution of research trials
  • Assisting Higher Degree (Research) students
  • Other such duties as deemed consistent with the position by supervisor
Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:
  • A diploma in agriculture related science from a recognized institution with a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a research/teaching facility or a commercial farm. A BSc degree in agriculture will be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated understanding of ruminant nutrition
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in animal handling and carry out basic farm routine operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collegially with technical and scientific staff and students with minimal supervision
  • Good skills in written and spoken English
Terms of Appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only.
