The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a research assistant to run animal trials on feed interventions, animal productivity and greenhouse gas emissions from livestock systems.
 
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to livestock research for the developing world. 
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Responsibilities

The candidate will contribute to ongoing research projects which focus on identifying the conditions that enable and constrain East African dairy producers in adopting climate smart agriculture practices. 
The research team aims to develop specific baseline estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock and livestock related products such as manure, identify effects of livestock systems on water quality and water quantity and identify potential mitigation practices that also improve dairy/beef production in smallholder systems. 
The candidate is expected to work within an international dynamic team in ILRI’s Mazingira Centre (mazingira.ilri.org).
The position entails a significant component  of hands-on work including handling of and sampling from large and small ruminants 
The candidate will contribute to this by undertaking the following activities:
  • Planning, participation and oversight of ruminant research trials
  • To coordinate and assist in day to day running and maintenance of animal facilities
  • To collect biological samples (eg. faeces, urine, and rumen liquor), carry out greenhouse gas flux measurements from ruminants in experimental trials, under the guidance of senior project staff
  • To assist with data entry and processing (data organization, calculation of greenhouse gas fluxes from animal respiration chambers)
  • To maintain relationships with different stakeholders including farmers and farmer groups, suppliers and ILRI ancillary staff, in order to facilitate the efficient prosecution of research trials
  • Assisting Higher Degree (Research) students
  • Other such duties as deemed consistent with the position by supervisor
Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:
  • A diploma in agriculture related science from a recognized institution with a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a research/teaching facility or a commercial farm. A BSc degree in agriculture will be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated understanding of ruminant nutrition
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in animal handling and carry out basic farm routine operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collegially with technical and scientific staff and students with minimal supervision
  • Good skills in written and spoken English
Terms of Appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. 
The position is on a 1-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

VSF Belgium Field Veterinarian Job in Garissa County Kenya

Position Title: Field Veterinarian
 
Duty Station: Garissa County
 
Duration: 11 months
 
Role: The Field Vet will provide technical support in the implementation of the VSF Belgium animal welfare project funded by The Brooke. 
This will be done in a in a culturally appropriate manner and in accordance with standards and guidelines provided by VSF Belgium and the Brooke. 
The holder of this position will be required to travel extensively to project sites within Garissa County. 
The position will report to the Project Manager, Garissa.
 
Responsibilities
 
Project implementation, monitoring and reporting
  • Carry out needs assessment in a participatory way to identify knowledge gaps and appropriate training aids for the local service providers
  • Develop work plans, facilitate implementation and formulate monitoring plans for the project in consultation with the programme manager and field team
  • Implement the principles of applied equine behavior and welfare, humane handling and compassion building, ensuring that the welfare needs of working donkeys are understood and prioritized within communities and livestock service providers
  • Provide veterinary knowledge and skills for on donkey/equine welfare and work with livestock service providers to ensure alignment with existing policies and minimum standards of welfare
  • Cultivate and encourage learning amongst the communities and livestock service providers in animal welfare, ethical decision-making, equine behavior and humane handling of working donkeys and their application in practice
  • Plan, facilitate, and monitor any capacity building/ training on animal welfare and related topics
  • Be at all times a role model for sympathetic and humane handling, treatment and management of working equine animals
  • Liaise with other players in the county with similar interventions to ensure synergy and collaboration
  • Support the Kenya team in development of project concepts and proposals with reference to specific donor regulations
  • Compile comprehensive mission specific, monthly and other relevant project reports or documentation
  • Responsible in promoting cross-learning between communities through gathering, documenting and sharing best practices

Minimum Requirements
  • University degree in Veterinary Medicine or Science, Animal health or related fields from a recognized university.

  • Knowledge of basic animal welfare concepts and an understanding of the importance of working equines to the economies of developing countries
  • An understanding of the evidence-based approach to veterinary medicine and animal welfare

Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

Based in Mandera

Reporting to the Area Coordinator, the successful candidate will be responsible for the monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) function within the Livelihoods and Donkey Welfare Project (LIDOW) and ensuring compliance with Practical Action’s internal and donor requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • With guidance from the Budget Holder and Area Coordinator, manage the monitoring, evaluation and learning functions of the project.
  • Work with project team in designing and implementing plans for monitoring performance, achievements and impacts of project.
  • Manage the M&E data base, carry out regular analysis of M&E data and produce timely reports on project performance for internal review.
  • Advice, guide and train project team on the principles and practice of monitoring, evaluation and project learning.
  • Ensure that findings and recommendations from evaluations are shared with all the key stakeholders, including the donor and beneficiaries.
  • Organize and participate in regular project and programme reviews.
  • Assist programme teams in developing concept notes and proposals with special emphasis on M&E aspects.
  • Participate in working groups, conferences, consultations with other agencies on M&E issues.
  • In liaison with the Grants Officer, ensure compliance with internal procedures and contractual obligations paying special attention to start up and closure procedures as well as donor requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and quality assurance review of reports and proposals.
  • Undertake any other relevant tasks as assigned by the Area Coordinator and Team Leader.
Qualifications & Skills
  • A bachelor`s degree in development or any other relevant field.
  • Diploma in Animal health and/or project management (desirable)
  • At least 3 years’ experience in development work and evidence of M&E
Other Competencies
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills; and ability to produce high quality reports.
  • Proven experience in results oriented monitoring and evaluation of development projects.
  • Experience in planning, organizing and conducting project evaluations

Animal Health Assistants 

(3 positions) – Based in Mandera

Reporting to the Project Officer (Animal Health), the successful candidate will be responsible for the frontline implementation of Livelihoods and Donkey Welfare Project in Mandera. 

Specific duties will include effective mobilization of communities and other stakeholders at the grassroots level as well as providing animal health services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Undertake community mobilisation and frontline extension work for livestock producers
  • Participate in needs assessments and other surveys within the cluster area
  • Participate in routine monitoring and evaluation of project activities
  • Contribute to the development and review of relevant project documents for information sharing
  • Collect data on a regular basis to document lessons learnt within project
  • Champion the development of strong community participation and ownership of the projects
  • Play lead role in managing relationships with grassroots communities and other stakeholders
  • Prepare accurate and timely project reports
  • Prepare and implement work plans/activity logs to time and budget
  • Actively participate in the identification and timely reporting (early warning) of significant livestock challenges
Qualifications & Skills
  • Diploma in Animal Health/Vet Medicine, Animal Production or range Management.
Other Competencies
  • Good Knowledge and understanding of pastoralist production systems and general pastoral issues in Kenya
  • Ability to think strategically and operate under pressure

Program / Department Summary:
 
Mercy Corps has been operational in Kenya since 2008, initially in response to the Post Election Violence in Rift Valley, and then expanding to a national program under USAID’s Yes Youth Can! initiative. 

In July 2011, Mercy Corps began operations in Northeastern Province through integrated humanitarian response in Wajir County, which currently focuses on supporting increased resilience through strengthening the livestock value chain, supporting diversified livelihood options and improving access to pasture and water resources.

The REGAL-IR program will support USAID’s Feed the Future Initiative through improving resilience to drought and other shocks. 

The objectives of the program include: strengthened and diversified livelihood options, increased inclusiveness of value chains, improved nutrition, improved capacity to peacefully manage conflicts, community-based natural resource management, and disaster risk reduction.

General Position Summary:
 
The Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) will play a key leadership role in the implementation of a proposed 5-year $49 million program to support increased resiliency and economic growth in Kenya’s Northern and Arid Lands. 

The DCOP will assist the COP in projects oversight, technical, administrative, operational and logistical management of the project. 

In absence of the COP; the DCOP will undertake some of the CoP responsibilities. S/he, with the assistance of other personnel will provide technical assistance in Objectives 1 & 2: strengthened & diversified livelihood options, and advancing value chain inclusiveness. 

The DCOP will also have direct oversight of program operations and M&E functions. 

Essential Job Functions:

Program Management
  • Provide leadership and strategic vision to the livelihood diversification; and pastoral livestock and marketing components of the REGAL program including workplan development, market analysis, partnership selection and management, and overall sector strategy.
Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) and Reporting
  • Facilitate the achievement of program targets and objectives and lead efforts to design effective M&E systems.
  • Oversee the scheduling and production of formal and informal reports on all aspects of the program in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure that M&E staff focus on assisting programs to generate practical information that can be used for ongoing program decision-making while also capturing results at the impact level.
Team Management
  • In close partnership with the COP, create a work atmosphere conducive to professional growth and development of excellent personnel at all levels.
  • Implement, and ensure all staff are effectively using, the performance planning and management system, establishing performance expectations and regularly providing constructive feedback. 
  • Promote accountability by conducting staff annual performance reviews with direct supervisees, and ensuring that supervisory staff do the same.

Knowledge and Experience:
  • MA/S  in international development, livestock, agriculture, economics, or related field of study
  • 5-10 years of overseas experience including five years in a senior management position
  • Strong understanding of U.S. government compliance issues
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English, including report development, writing and editing
  • Strong management skills, with good understanding of relevant cross-cultural issues
  • Experience in value chain development, facilitation and agribusiness is added advantage
  • 5+ years’ experience in Kenya or the Horn of Africa preferred
  • Knowledge of Somali and Kiswahili preferred
Success Factors:
 
The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, M&E skills. 

S/he will be able to establish good inter-personal relationships and network, and have already established relationships with and/or substantive knowledge of key players in the drylands of Kenya.

Living Conditions/Environmental Conditions:
 
This position will be based in Garissa, which is an unaccompanied post, eligible for hardship and R&R benefits.

Garissa is located in the North Eastern province of Kenya, and has a population of approximately 70,000.  It lies along the Tana River, and has a very warm climate.  

Most of the town’s inhabitants are ethic Somalis and pastoralists.  Travel from Nairobi to Garissa takes approximately five hours by car.  

There are many international agencies with a presence in Garissa.  Mercy Corps staff members will live in group housing and have access to basic services. Cell phone coverage is adequate.

Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting.

Job Summary:

The Livestock /NRM Manager is responsible for providing overall leadership, direction, supervision and implementation of the program within the parameters set by FH and donor contracts.

Key Result # 1
  • Lead and provide strategic direction.
  • Design and formulate the general framework and strategy of the Livestock/NRM program and provide leadership in the implementation of Livestock/NRM Program operations in line with FHK and donor requirements.
  • Prepare detailed monthly, quarterly and annual activity plans for the successful implementation of Livestock and NRM programming, including baseline surveys, extension work, training and documentation of data as outlined in various grants.
  • Will also be expected to take part in proposal writing.
Key Result # 2
  • Coordination/collaboration. Serve as the primary technical advisor in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of both livestock and NRM programs; coordinate with the other program managers to ensure optimal coordination of the various program components to the achievement of program goals.
  • Meet with all relevant community, government, NGOs and church leaders within the great target area to educate and inform them on various grant objectives to enhance “ownership” for the purposes of achieving the program goals and objectives in the region.
  • Represent FH Kenya in all relevant forums.
Key Result # 3
  • Monitoring and Evaluation. In liaison with the M&E Manager, ensure that M&E systems are in place for livestock and NRM activities and that all staff achieve program goals and objectives.
  • Conduct periodical M&E activities to determine program progress.
Key Result # 4
  • Provide staff and financial management.
  • Manage the program effectively by supporting staff through objective setting and mentoring, completing performance appraisals and promoting high morale and teamwork.
  • Oversee budgeting processes and closely monitor program expenditures.
Qualifications
  • A strong Christian committed to serving the poor in full agreement with FH’s foundation and beliefs as expressed in our Vision, Mission and Values.
  • Must be a holder of a BSc – Agriculture or Livestock Production & Range Management or its equivalent from a recognized institution. (A masters degree in relevant field will be an added advantage).
  • Practical experience in project cycle management.
  • Over 5 years experience in a similar or comparable position (NGO experience will be an added advantage).
  • Should have good knowledge of local community development issues - particularly poverty and pastoral livelihoods.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Should have the ability to maintain performance expectations in diverse cultural contexts, psychologically stressful environments and physical hardship conditions with limited resources.

TechnoServe (TNS) is a nonprofit international development organization founded in 1968. Its mission is to help entrepreneurial men and women break the cycle of poverty by building businesses that create jobs, income, and economic opportunities for their families, their communities, and their countries.

TechnoServe is currently starting off a Smallholder Poultry Agribusiness Development program that will be implemented in Western Kenya and Nyanza.

This program aims to sustainably improve the livelihoods of 10,000 smallholder poultry producers of indigenous chickens, and in doing so help 50,450 individuals improve their livelihood.

The Poultry Infrastructure Advisor will work closely with Poultry Producers Business Groups, local stakeholders, and sub-contractors, and management.

Minimum requirements:
  • Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction management or similar.
  • At least 3 years in the management of engineering based or engineering related operations.

Technical Expert – Monitoring and Evaluation

Provide management of the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) components of the Smallholder Poultry Agribusiness Development Program (SPADE) program.

The M&E Officer will work closely with the Business Advisors, Senior Business Advisors and the management.

S/he will be responsible for enabling evidence-based decision-making processes by project leadership, maintenance of SPADE M&E systems, and effective implementation of SPADE M&E activities.

Minimum Requirements:-
  • Qualifications in business, economics, statistics or international development-related studies required;
  • At least 3 years of experience with M&E methods and approaches, including designing, planning, and implementing M&E systems, analyzing and reporting using a logical framework and other strategic planning approaches;

  • Degree in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Business Management, Community Development, Entrepreneurship or a related field is required.

Provide leadership and guidance on implementation of communication strategies and initiatives within the project.

The Information and Communication Advisor will work closely with Poultry Producers Business Groups (PPBGs), local stakeholders, and sub-contractors, and management.

S/he will be responsible for timely and effective implementation of project activities and achievement of a portion of the project’s goals.

Minimum Requirements:-
  • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, advertising, communications or related subject area.
  • At least three years experience in writing, editing, design, web work database management, web content management, blogging and new media tools.
  • Experience in supporting communications and/or media relations in the area of agricultural/entrepreneurial research for development is an added advantage.
  • Ability to read, understand and assimilate complex technical information to produce clear, well-written summaries.
  • Ability to present and package information into various formats to suit specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office packages, basic knowledge of and skills in desktop publishing, HTML, photography and photo editing.
Program Assistant
