The World Agroforestry Centre is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. 
The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, which also hosts the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) project of the CGIAR Gender and Diversity Program.

AWARD is a pioneering project to boost the talent pool of African women in the agricultural sciences. 
AWARD delivers career development fellowships to hundreds of women in agricultural institutions throughout sub-Saharan Africa.  
The project covers 11 countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Main Purpose of the Job

AWARD requires expertise to provide strategic, tactical and operational support to the AWARD Director in relation to four critical issues:

1. Coordination of AWARD’s science cornerstone, including smooth implementation of the advanced science training (especially regarding research attachments) and training in science skills (research proposal and science writing as well as presentation skills) regarding content of such courses and development of appropriate training material including gender-responsiveness of agricultural research)
 
2. Design and implementation of a specific training course on gender-responsiveness in agricultural research for development focused on collection and interpretation of gender disaggregated data, preferably in partnership with renowned capacity building institutions and preferably to be delivered by African trainers to be trained on this subject
 
3. Support towards monitoring and evaluation and reporting of the science cornerstone activities in AWARD II
 
4. Representation of AWARD in science / research related forums with a view of building and strengthening AWARD’s partnerships with relevant sub-regional, Africa-wide, and international stakeholders in ARD with a view to support sustainability of the AWARD approach.

AWARD’s science cornerstone is critical for the program’s success, particularly in the areas of gender-responsiveness in ARD and planning and implementation of competitive research attachments and other advanced science training, but also regarding a strategy for sustainability and forward planning. 
Consequently, the AWARD Team requires support in designing and coordination of implementation of these activities including selection of partners and trainer and handling host institution selection and follow-up, planning and implementation of science skills courses, and reflection / forward planning exercises.

Having regard to the current team composition in the science cornerstone (the science coordinator is supported by a science cornerstone officer) this role requires a full-time regionally recruited position.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the leadership of the AWARD Director, the AWARD Science Coordinator will:
  • lead AWARD’s science cornerstone, in particular regarding competitive advanced science training of fellows and content of AWARD’s science skills courses
  • supervise and guide the AWARD Science Cornerstone Officer and Science Cornerstone Assistant in smooth implementation of all activities of AWARD’s science cornerstone
  • supervise and guide the AWARD Science Cornerstone Officer and Science Cornerstone Assistant in monitoring and evaluation of all science cornerstone activities
  • ensure timely and accurate reporting of all science cornerstone activities as per requirements/grants
  • support the Director in the development of material and trainers to deliver a course on gender responsiveness of agricultural research assist the AWARD team in developing a sustainability strategy with key African partners
Qualifications and Experience
  • PhD in a field of science relevant to sub-Saharan African agriculture
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the development and management of research and development (R&D) projects in Africa
  • Proven experience in developing skills and careers of scientists
  • Proven experience in M&E of science capacity building and science projects/programs
  • Widely networked and well regarded within the sub-Saharan African science system: universities, national agricultural research systems, research networks, etc
  • Experience in gender responsiveness in ARD as well as inclusiveness of work places
  • Good written and spoken English. Good written and oral communication skills in French are highly desirable
Terms of offer

We are combining business and clinical innovations to provide affordable maternity and reproductive health services to low-income urban women. 
We have launched our first clinics in Nairobi this year, and plan to expand within Nairobi and to other locations in the region. .

Job Summary
 
In 2011 we launched mobile clinic services providing antenatal care at community sites around northeastern Nairobi, and earlier this year we opened our first maternity on the Eastern bypass just before Ruiru town.  
Today, we are seeking several nurses/midwives to work in our current facilities as well as others we will open in the near future.

We seek nurses with good experience in maternal and child health and a strong commitment to providing friendly and respectful care to all women. 
Along with their clinical duties, the nurses will have the opportunity to work with new technologies and quality improvement techniques, and work with clinicians and advisors at the forefront of maternal health. 
It is an excellent opportunity to learn new clinical skills, and to receive mentorship in a clinical setting and CME.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive antenatal care, postnatal care, and family planning for mothers and mothers-to-be in Jacaranda’s maternity and/or mobile clinic
  • Provide friendly, helpful service, advice, guidance, and education to all patients
  • Maintain patient data using our electronic medical records systems
  • Provide comprehensive PMTCT services and counseling and referrals for HIV
  • Work closely with the Jacaranda Health management team and teammates to identify and implement opportunities to improve clinical quality and clinic operations
  • Diagnose, treat, and refer as appropriate antenatal, labour and postnatal complications
  • Conduct normal deliveries and assess any complications that may require referral 
  • Advise mothers on issues accordingly.
Desired Qualifications
 
The desired candidate should possess the following:
  • Certificate in nursing from a recognized institution. A Diploma or Degree in nursing is an added advantage.
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience working in a busy maternity, including experience handling complications during normal delivery.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and empathy; equally comfortable providing one-on-one counseling and presenting birth-preparedness education to groups.
  • A commitment to providing world-class care, and the curiosity and commitment to excellence needed for continuous quality improvement.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team in a culturally diverse environment.
  • A good understanding of community dynamics. Knowledge and familiarity with low-income urban areas of Nairobi will be an added advantage.

The Assistant Driller will work within South Sudan, mainly in the Unity State area with possible travel to needed areas. 
The main responsibilities will include operating a variety of water well drilling rigs such as rotary (compressed air and fluid/mud), percussion/cable tool, reverse circulation and auger drilling. 
The Assistant Driller will record drilling progress and drilling information such as driller’s log, select and install casings and other well fixtures. 
The Assistant Driller will also be responsible in placing gravel, developing wells, constructing well protection structures, treating and disinfecting wells and in pump testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Select the appropriate drill for the job, using knowledge of rock or soil conditions;
  • Operate controls to stabilize machines and to position and align drills;
  • Select and attach drill bits and drill rods, adding more rods as hole depths increase and changing drill bits as needed;
  • Regulate air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure, according to the type of rock or concrete being drilled;
  • Operate machines to flush earth cuttings or to blow dust from holes;
  • Assemble and position machines, augers, casing pipes, and other equipment, using hand and power tools;
  • Perform routine maintenance and upgrade work on machines and equipment, such as replacing parts, building up drill bits, and lubricating machinery;
  • Verify depths and alignments of boring positions;
  • Start, stop, and control drilling speed of machines and insertion of casings into holes;
  • Record drilling progress and geological data and extract core samples. Inspect core samples to determine nature of strata, or take samples to laboratories for analysis;
  • Drive trucks, tractors, or truck-mounted drills to and from work sites;
  • Monitor drilling operations, checking gauges and listening to equipment to assess drilling conditions and to determine the need to adjust drilling or alter equipment;
  • Retrieve lost equipment from bore holes, using retrieval tools and equipment;
  • Place and install screens, casings, gravel, pumps, and other well fixtures;
  • Disinfect, reconstruct, and redevelop contaminated wells and water pumping systems, and clean and disinfect new wells in preparation for use;
  • Pour water into wells, or pump water or slush into wells to cool drill bits and to remove drillings;
  • Perform pumping tests to assess well yield;
  • Ensuring the training of national staff in technical areas including drilling skill, installation of pumps, casings, etc;
  • Monitor the events/outputs to ensure the timely completion of the drilling project;
  • Producing maintenance and service schedule of drill rigs and vehicles;
  • Make sure that weekly/monthly reporting is completed on time and is fully detailed.
  • Ensure the project will satisfy the needs of the beneficiaries;
  • Travel to areas of high need and assist with other Samaritan’s Purse water projects in South Sudan;
  • Attend daily morning devotions and participate in prayer support for the ministry, its donors and volunteers;
  • Maintain a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, and the general public;
  • Assess, manage, and report critical physical, emotional, or spiritual concerns of supervised staff;
Education / Experience Needed
  • Completion of 2-3 year water well drilling apprenticeship program or equivalent experience in water well drilling;
  • At least 6 years’ work experience in water well drilling or similar role;
  • Skills in plumbing work; welding and similar works is an added advantage;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
