 The African Forest Forum (AFF) is an association of individuals who share the pursuit and commitment to the sustainable management, use and conservation of the forest and tree resources of Africa for the betterment of the socio-economic wellbeing of its people and for the stability and improvement of its environment.
The purpose of AFF is to provide a platform and create an enabling environment for independent and objective analysis, advocacy and advice on all relevant policy and technical issues pertaining to achieving sustainable management, use and conservation of Africa’s forest and tree resources as part of efforts to reduce poverty, protect the environment and promote economic and social development.

The position

The African Forest Forum is recruiting for the position of a Programme Officer to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, or at some other location, reporting to the Executive Secretary through the Senior Programme Officer.

 Duties and responsibilities

To assist the Senior Programme Officer in the coordination and implementation of activities on:
  • Climate change as it relates to forest resources and livelihoods;
  • The fuel-fibre-food nexus;
  • Forest-water relations.
To assist the Senior Programme Officer on any other duties and responsibilities as may be directed by the Executive Secretary.
 
To represent the AFF, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, on matters relating to the above duties, and on any other matters as directed by the Executive Secretary and the Governing Council of AFF.

Minimum qualifications and skills
  • Masters degree in forestry, environment,  natural resources management or related area,  plus a minimum of 5 years of post masters experience;
  • Must have the capacity and demonstrated experience in the application of forest science to the management of natural resources;
  • Must  be a good team player;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French with a working knowledge of English.
  • Female applicants from the Congo Basin countries  have an advantage.

World Agroforestry Centre Scientist / Ethiopia Country Liaison Officer

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Scientist/Country Liaison Officer to establish strong partnerships with various institutions and development organizations in the Federal Republic of Ethiopia. 
The Officer will work with them to generate tree-based solutions to the problems of rural poverty, hunger and environmental degradation. 
The principal role of the incumbent would be to coordinate the development of a comprehensive agroforestry research for development programme for ICRAF in Ethiopia including; capacity strengthening, mobilizing resources for collaborative research with Ethiopian institutions and with other national agroforestry and land management programmes in the Eastern Africa Region. 
The Officer will be expected to promote collaborative research for development activities with NARS and other relevant institutions such as educational institutions, extension providers, NGOs, CBOs and the private sector in the country. 
Under the overall guidance of the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and GRP leaders with projects and project proposals in Ethiopia, and in effective partnership with appropriate institutions in the country, the incumbent will be expected to perform the following tasks:

Requirements:
  • Plan and execute a collaborative agroforestry research-for-development agenda in Ethiopia;
  • Plan and implement an effective resource mobilization strategy aimed at supporting a significant expansion of the ICRAF-Ethiopia project portfolio;
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with government, donors, farmer organizations, NGOs, the private sector, education and research institutions (including other CGIAR centres) and international agencies with a view to institutionalizing land management and agroforestry research and development in the country;
  • Liaise with other East & Central Africa regional and national programme scientists and Ethiopian institutions for technical exchange and collaboration;
  • Analyze, interpret, and report research and development results to ICRAF, donors and other development partners. As a research for development institution, ICRAF places a lot of emphasis on generating international public goods. Thus it attaches great importance to reporting of findings and experiences through peer reviewed articles and similar media;
  • Prepare technical and policy reviews on specific subject areas with emphasis on future land management and agroforestry research and development needs in Ethiopia;
  • Supervise and participate in the preparation of training materials and participate in training courses as a resource person;
  • Assist in the preparation, implementation and management of the regional plan of work and budget;
  • Supervise, provide logistical support and report on all ICRAF activities in Ethiopia, including financial and administrative oversight.

About the position

Reporting to the Regional Coordinator-East Africa, the incumbent will seek to build strong partnerships with institutions and development partners based in Uganda and work together to generate tree-based solutions to the problems of rural poverty, hunger and environmental degradation. 
The principal role of the Country Representative is to coordinate the development of a comprehensive agroforestry research for development programme for ICRAF in Uganda. 
This includes capacity strengthening, mobilizing resources for collaborative research with Ugandan institutions and other national agroforestry and land management programmes in the Eastern Africa Region. 
The incumbent will promote collaborative research for development activities with NARS and other relevant institutions such as educational institutions, extension providers, NGOs, CBOs and the private sector in the country. 
The research agenda will include innovative research on climate change and agro-biodiversity, as well as participatory evaluation and dissemination of the best-bet land management practices and agroforestry innovations that address issues of soil fertility, food security and environmental concerns in the context of opportunities and constraints to scaling up the wide adoption of agroforestry technologies among smallholder farmers. 
The job specifically includes the following duties and responsibilities to be carried out under the overall guidance of the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and GRP leaders with projects in Uganda, and in effective partnership with appropriate institutions in the country:

Requirements
  • PhD in Agroforestry or Natural Resource management
  • At least five (5) years hands-on field experience in managing interdisciplinary programmes and multi-disciplinary staff, and projects focusing on the rural poor, ideally with experience in Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular, Uganda;
  • Experience in designing and implementing multi-institutional programmes and projects;
  • Proven ability to publish scientific articles in refereed journals;
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of the role of science in contributing to development in rural areas;
  • Demonstrated English writing skills, and proven ability to contribute to the research and development literature;
  • Excellent oral presentation skills and computer literacy; and
  • Proven resource mobilization skills including proven evidence of ability to raise funds.

ANAFE - Communications Officer Job in Nairobi Kenya

 The African Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Education (ANAFE), supported by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya, was established in 1993 and currently is made up of 132 member institutions (universities and colleges) in 35 African countries. The mission of ANAFE is to enhance Agricultural Education for Development. 
The network consists of four regional chapters known as RAFTs (Regional Agricultural Fora for Training ‑ one each in Eastern and Central Africa (ECA), Southern Africa (SA), the Sahelian countries (Sahel), and the Africa Humid Tropics countries (AHT)) ‑ and 21 National Chapters known as NAFTs (National Agricultural Fora for Training). Activities in each RAFT are spearheaded through a Focal Institution. 
The ANAFE Secretariat is based in Nairobi Kenya and supports the networking functions.

The position

Given the growth that ANAFE is going through, the network seeks to engage a Communications Officer to be responsible for the development and execution of ANAFE’s communication strategy.

Terms of Reference

The position is one year consultancy basis. 
The Communications Officer will be working at the Secretariat Office in Nairobi, Kenya and will report to the ANAFE Executive Secretary. 
Specifically the Communications Officer will:
  • Develop and execute a communication strategy to ensure greater participation of ANAFE member institutions, partners and stakeholders in ANAFE activities.
  • Provide communication advice including the crafting of relevant messages and use of the right media channels by critically developing strategic solutions to given communication challenges.
  • Produce compelling news, stories, newsletters, presentation materials and other communications products reflecting ANAFE themes and priority areas.
  • Produce communication resources for the ANAFE web and social media outlets.
  • Design and package ANAFE outputs into periodic information briefs (e.g. brochures, newsletters and banners) for wide dissemination.
  • Capture and publish photos and videos of events related to ANAFE activities in ANAFE documents and web space.
  • Publish news, reports and major ANAFE activities on the ANAFE portal and blog.
  • Develop strong media relations with relevant partners to promote ANAFE profile.
  • Assist in improving the communication skills of staff.
Consultant Profile

The person should have:
  • A Degree in either of Communications, Journalism or Public relations and post-graduate training with at least 5-10 years of relevant working experience.
  • Working knowledge in Web platforms and publishing, Knowledge management, Graphic design and processing, Photo and Video shooting skills.
  • Very good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Other Requirements

Knowledge of both English and French languages will be an added advantage. The person must be flexible and be ready to travel and work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
