Bridge International Academies is looking for an energetic, dynamic individual with extensive experience in conveyancing to support the Lands Department / Unit at BIA. Because of the projected growth, the company is continuously looking for land where the schools will be build. ALL over the Country in due course. It is the role of the Legal Officer to ensure that we are compliant in as far as Land transactions are concerned.

It is the role of the Legal Officer to ensure that we are compliant in as far as Land transactions are concerned.

A central part of our operations includes the identification, verification, negotiation and purchase of plots of land for our schools – this might be inside a slum or in a low-income community on the edge of a town.

These plots sometimes have clouded title histories, but through our land identification and procurement process we must establish a certain amount of security -- understanding the previous ownership, other potential competing claims, titling possibility, issues with city / municipal council, lands office, etc.

To make these determinations and the actual purchase, the process may involve negotiations with local village elders, local government administration, and local landlords, and ultimately a sales or lease contract written with some or all of these participants. It is incumbent on the Legal Officer will ensure that all documentation in as far as the Land transactions are concerned are valid.

The Legal Officer will focus on the following elements which will include but not limited to:

Legal risk
  • Provide legal protection and risk management advice especially on legal information
Policy development
  • Reviewing and drafting contracts, agreements and internal policies and ensure they are in compliance with all statutory and legal requirements
Contract negotiation
  • Reviewing all contracts and other documentation where BIA has committed itself and assessing legal implications that need to be brought to the attention of the Management
  • Preparing, reviewing and modifying contractual instruments to support and assist and support various business activities
  • Negotiating, reviewing and drafting documentation for business transactions and preparing and advising on necessary check lists to be adopted to ensure timely information is available for decision making
Litigation management
  • Investigating the causes of litigation
  • Reviewing any outstanding litigation and liaising with any external lawyers
  • Develop a risk matrix on the implications of new projects
Regulatory compliance
  • Formulate compliance check lists to be used for the purpose of ensuring that all information is provided accordingly
  • Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations e .g stamp duty and related issues that arise
  • Ensuring that all licenses, agreements and agreements of BIA are valid and the legal contracts are renewed before expiry
  • Ensuring safe custody of all legal documentation in order to maintain confidentiality
Reporting
  • Prepare monthly / quarterly / bi annual reports as required
About you
  • Possession of an LLB undergraduate degree and Diploma in Law
  • Must be registered with a Professional body
  • Possession of a minimum of 5 years experience in conveyancing
  • Proven track record of developing comprehensive contract documents as a risk mitigation measure
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills necessary for interaction with negotiating parties
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and experience with laws dealing with commercial contracts administration particularly contract negotiation , preparation and administration
  • Ability to provide independent advice (orally and in writing) to management on highly technical matters
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to delicately solve sensitive matters
  • Ability to work for long hours
  • Previous field experience desirable

We have a need to recruit for the position of Sales Manager Recruitment whose primary focus will be to design, implement and manage a target-driven lead generation mechanism that can recruit several thousand of the right kind of high-quality candidates to train to be teachers and school managers at Bridge International Academies.

Key Responsibilities

Sales
  1. Successfully recruit and convert several thousand candidates for teacher and school manager positions to participate in and succeed at Bridge Institute Training, a training designed to vet candidates for positions in our schools.
  2. Deploy teams three to four times a year for massive recruitment (lead generation) effort to ultimately employ successful teachers and school managers in Bridge International Academies throughout Kenya and East Africa.
  3. From understanding the hiring needs, determine sales funnel recruitment ratios (numbers to interview, invite to training, show-up, complete, and hire) and put together a recruitment strategy which hits targets.
  4. Manage remote teams in the field to successfully find and recruit and vet candidates for the training.
  5. Implement targets for remote recruitment sales teams and consider compensation scheme based on target quality and quantity.
  6. Work with academic managers to determine appropriate vetting tests to assure the best candidates are invited to the training program.
  7. Determine teams and all organizational and team logistics around deploying teams to the field for recruitment execution.
  8. Manage the speed and accuracy of inputting data for the candidate’s background information and testing results into a database.
  9. Be responsible and accountable for hitting recruitment targets and the quality required.
Marketing
  1. Understanding of the marketing and communication channels for the communities where we intend to open schools and how to access and convert the best candidates.
  2. Put together a comprehensive marketing message which encourages would-be applicants to apply for and go to the 7-week training.
Logistics
  1. Through a call center staff, inform all invited trainees of their invitation to training. Communicate location of training and relevant information to them.
  2. Manage the invited candidates as they register and confirm an MPESA number so that they can receive travel subsidies
  3. Manage all communication and candidate related information until they arrive at the first day of training and are handed over to the training implementation teams.
Specialist knowledge required
  • Solid geographic knowledge of Kenya and East Africa necessary.
  • Experience building and managing functionality to a data management system
  • Experience managing and working with remote teams to collect and access data in an organized way
  • Strong computer skills, including Access, Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, video and Internet.
About You
  • University degree necessary with significant team management experience.
  • Master’s degree in a business or marketing related discipline preferable
Professional:
  • 5-7 years working with and managing a target-driven sales team, preferably in East Africa.
  • Significant experience with focused marketing and managing a marketing budget.
  • Experience managing remote teams necessary.
  • Experience with large-scale recruitment preferred.
  • Experience working in, preferably in a communications capacity, to the impoverished communities in which BIA operates
  • Experience growing and scaling an organization in developing markets a plus

In particular, the paralegal officers will play a major role in following up issues within the communities where we work and ensuring a professional approach to monitoring, following up, reporting and documenting arising legal issues.

Key Areas of Responsibilities:
  • Support the development of the company’s legal structures and systems
  • Developing and implementing action plans in consultations with department heads and the Senior legal Counsel
  • Visit construction sites, schools and training sites to build adequate information on potential legal issues for discussion with respective heads of departments and Senior Legal Counsel
  • Trainee contract reviews and follow up any defaulters in a structured way
  • Handling correspondences on legal aspects and recommending appropriate legal actions
  • Participate in drawing and vetting staff and commercial contracts, leases and other legal instruments while working closely with the lands department legal support team
  • Train a team of champions within departments basic legal procedures and incident reporting.
  • Ensure proper records and action based minutes of all legal matters handled at community and site levels
  • Accompany staff on field activities where disputes and conflicts occur to guide discussions and collate all pertinent information to be used for decisions and actions.
Required qualifications, skills and attributes
  • Diploma or Certificate in Law from the Kenya School of Law
  • Paralegal training with specializations in land, labour, children’s rights, arbitration or commercial areas
  • Exposure successful resolution of labour issues and disputes within informal communities will be valuable
  • Possession of strong and positive and reliable networks within major urban settlements in Kenya is highly desirable
  • At least 3 years experience in a similar position in middle level management within a corporate NGO or working in a busy legal practice specializing in community support
  • Qualified or well exposed arbitrator with proven negotiation skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel required)

Required qualifications, skills and attributes
  • LLB degree from a recognized institution
  • Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law
  • Hold a valid practicing certificate or in the process of acquiring one
  • Possession of company secretarial skills and exposure to resolution of labour issues and informal community issues will be valuable
  • At least 3 years experience in a similar position in middle level management within a corporate or large institution or a busy and well established legal practice
