Sub Editors

The Sub Editors are the gate-keepers who put together the newspaper and ensure that stories are edited to house style and free of errors, and that the presentation in terms of design and layout is appealing and conforms to house style.

Role of the Position

You will be part of our Editorial team under the overall direction of the Group Chief Editor with the
following roles:
  • To edit stories for accuracy, facts, grammar and simplicity.
  • To edit pictures selected to go with particular stories.
  • Write headlines and captions.
  • Lay out pages and sign off for press.
Expertise and Experience
  • University degree with a bias ¡n English or Mass Communication
  • Training in Journalism
  • Minimum of two years experience.
The Person
  • Well developed analytical skills.
  • Ability to make quick decisions and to improvise if necessary.
  • Energy and ability to work irregular hours.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • High degree of integrity.

Salary:
 
I. Our fulltime writers earn between Kshs 45,000-120,000.
 
II. Our part-time employees earn a compensation of Kshs 350 for every completed double-spaced page.
 
In this case, financial returns are directly linked to writer output.
 
We however have a policy of increasing writers’ salary with the passing of every 10 days.
 
Qualifications required:
  • Applicants MUST hold at least an undergraduate degree/diploma.
  • Acquaintance with the mainstream writing styles: MLA, Chicago/Turabian, Harvard, APA.
  • Previous and verifiable experience with research writing.
  • Unrestricted internet access.
  • Merit in the written English language. This MUST be verified either by certification, or in the sample to be submitted after initial contact (or both).
  • Verifiable credentials 2 or more academic branches of academics, e.g. Political Science, IT, Accounting, Law, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:
The locally recruited Field Outreach Assistant is expected to provide support to the Field Outreach Coordinator for Kenya in executing the outreach strategies at the local level. 
He/she will conduct outreach activities and will assist in developing strategies and action plans relevant to various phases of the judicial proceedings, establish close contacts and partnerships with NGOs, community leaders, local media and educational institutions.
Essential Qualifications:
1. Completion of secondary education. 
2. At least six years of relevant work experience. 
3. Initiative, adaptability in stressful situations. 
4. Ability to operate databases. 
5. Demonstrated skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural and multiethnic environment. 
6. Strong communication skills (spoken and written), including ability to draft/compile a variety of written communications products and to articulate ideas in a clear, concise style. 
7. Ability to effectively communicate information to the public; ability to establish and maintain effective business connections.
Knowledge of languages:
The working languages of the Court are English and French. For this position fluency in English is essential. Knowledge of Kenyan Swahili will be considered an asset.
