PATH is an international nonprofit organization that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions, enabling communities worldwide to break longstanding cycles of poor health. PATH’s mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors.
 
USAID awarded a comprehensive health service delivery project to PATH to improve the health of Kenyans in the western region of the country.  
The project, APHIAplus Western Kenya, builds upon USAID/Kenya’s country-wide health service support project known as the AIDS, Population and Health Integrated Assistance II (APHIA II).  PATH and its partners are implementing the APHIAplus project in Western and Nyanza Provinces from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015.  
It is working w closely with the Government of Kenya and a wide variety of non-government agencies to strengthen health care services throughout the two provinces. 
In addition to addressing specific diseases, the APHIAplus Western Kenya project  works to  strengthen the region’s health care system by rehabilitating health facilities, training staff, and supporting supply and communication networks.  

PATH seeks to recruit a Senior Gender Advisor to provide technical guidance to the project’s technical and mentoring teams to support the mainstreaming of gender activities into the range of community interventions in the provinces, counties and districts in zone one. 
S/he will work with the project’s service delivery team to ensure that health services are gender sensitive. 
The Senior Gender Advisor will help to adapt and develop a range of gender-related messages, job aides and intervention strategies.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Ensure smooth operation of gender programs, by implementing and monitoring ongoing gender-related activities to ensure that they are on schedule, meet program quality criteria, and yield expected results.
  • Monitor project activities to identify opportunities to incorporate and strengthen gender-related elements.
  • Create training materials and other job aides for use by project staff and partners
Required Skills   
  • Demonstrated skill in implementing components of behavior change interventions, especially in gender. This includes training, community mobilization and advocacy.
  • Team-focused with the ability to build strong working relationships in the field with a wide range of individuals of varying socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proven skill managing relations with partners, including key stakeholders, implementing partners, peer coordinators, non-governmental organizations, government officials and the community.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with considerable knowledge in computers.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven effectiveness engaging others, being approachable and speaking with confidence.
  • Demonstrated skill approaching challenges with flexibility and an open mind
Required Experience
  • Master's degree in social studies, community development, sociology or equivalent and a minimum of seven years of experience in gender programming. 
  • Experience in HIV and adolescent reproductive health programs/issues preferred.

Background information:- With the existing health/medical expertise and capacity, IOM is scaling up its migration health programme in Somalia in the areas of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Tuberculosis, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)/Environmental Health (EH), Maternal and Child Health (MCH), emergency health response and psychosocial support to vulnerable migrants and mobile populations (MMPs) and their host communities:-
 
General Functions:- Working under the overall supervision of Chief of Mission IOM Somalia, and under the direct supervision of Health Programme Officer-Somalia, in close collaboration and consultation with Public Information and Reports Officer – Somalia as well as IOM National Programme Office based in Puntland and the IOM sub-offices in Somaliland and Puntland, in coordination with the Somali Unit in Nairobi and colleagues in the IOM regional support team for health, the incumbent will enhance the visibility of IOM Somalia in particular MHD projects through the following responsibilities:

Essential Functions:-
  • Developing IEC materials for WASH and psychosocial projects.
  • Developing a migration health communications strategy.
  • Photographing events, workshops and projects and assisting to draft write-ups;
  • Developing a Digital Photo Library for IOM Somalia.
  • Compiling, vetting, organizing, editing, and captioning digital images from across the region for IOM Somalia’s Digital Photo Library.
  • Overseeing production of multi-media content that showcases the impact of IOM’s work in the field.
  • Developing content for IOM Somalia’s social media networks.
  • Overseeing editing, designing, and production of ad-hoc IOM Somalia publications like reports, magazines, info sheets and project briefs.
  • Updating IOM Regional and global website with content provided by IOM Somalia programme managers.
  • Assisting to create branded communication materials using Adobe InDesign.
  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive database of media contacts, quality printers, and external partners.
Deliverables
  • Production of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials for migration health.
  • Draft of Migration Health Communication Strategy.
  • Development of Digital Photo Library.
  • Development and maintenance of database for communications materials.
Payment Schedule
  • On the last day of each month in exchange for monthly performance evaluation and monthly reports.
Desirable Qualifications
 
Languages Skills
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge of Somali an asset.
Education
  • Completed degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
Experience
  • At least one year of progressive experience working on migration health communications in the UN systems.
  • Experience in coordinating communications outputs across various programmes.
  • Experience in working on Somali-based programmes and projects.
Skills and Competencies
  • Demonstrated strong technical capacity in health communication.
  • The ability to edit, catalogue and take quality photographs.
  • Knowledge of image copyright agreements and ethics.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Familiarity with standard office applications and Adobe products.
  • Experience in updating content management systems (CMS) a distinct advantage.
  • Attention to detail and brand awareness is mandatory.
  • A pro-active self-starter with creative flair.
  • Experience in, or a strong desire to grasp issues relating to migration health.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
  • Fluency in written and verbal English.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, approach, and coordinate with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and levels of expertise.
  • Ability to work independently, with flexibility.
  • Ability to work in a team and good interpersonal skills.
Reporting: The incumbent will report to Health Programme Officer-Somalia on regular basis to assess
the progress of the exercise.
 
Fees payable: USD.1,500 to USD.2,000 (depending on the qualification and experience); inclusive of DSA and other benefits except for benefits (such as DSA) when travelling outside duty station.

Gender Specialist

 The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) is a not-for-profit sub-regional organization of the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of eleven countries: Burundi, D.R. Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. 
ASARECA’s mission is promoting economic growth, fighting poverty, reducing hunger and enhancing resources through regional collective action in agricultural research for development. 
It aims at increasing the efficiency of agricultural research in the region so as to enhance productivity, value added and competitiveness of the regional agricultural system.
 
We are seeking to recruit for a Gender Specialist to steer implementation of the ASARECA gender mainstreaming strategy. 
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Gender Specialist will be charged with implementation of the gender mainstreaming strategy and ‘Champion’ the process in ASARECA.
 
Key Tasks
  • Support the strengthening of gender mainstreaming in ASARECA’s programmes and projects which includes use of gender criteria in project proposals, reporting and evaluation, and revision of the gender criteria where appropriate
  • Develop, propose and undertake gender mainstreaming initiatives in the region including providing technical backstopping towards the development of a gender strategy in each of the NARI’s in the 11 ASARECA countries
  • Support ASARECA and its partners to formulate gender responsive policies to enhance gender mainstreaming in agricultural research
  • Identify and build capacity of gender quality assurance teams at appropriate levels in each NARS of ASARECA.
  • Coordinate and maintain a close working relationship and strong communication channels with ASARECA stakeholders
  • Serve as ASARECA’s contact point and partner with social and gender policy experts in the ECA region and consequently build a network for addressing issues of regional priority in relation to gender.
  • Identify individuals who can be champions of change in partner organizations in order to enhance institutional commitment at ASARECA.
Qualification and experience
 
The person will have a University degree in Gender or Development studies, Social sciences, Humanitarian studies or related field.
 
The person will have 5 years progressive experience in application of gender mainstreaming in programmes and projects in agricultural research for development in some or all of the ASARECA member countries with proven qualities of synthesis and strong ability to analyze, prepare and present written materials in excellent English. 
Knowledge of French is desirable.
 
Remuneration and other Benefits
 
The remuneration package is comparable to those offered by similar regional organisations in Eastern and Central Africa. It includes a regionally competitive salary and allowances for housing and transport, education for dependent children, health insurance, gratuity and home leave.
