Applications are invited for this full time post to be based in Nairobi on a 2 year contract from 1 October 2012.
 
The British Institute in Eastern Africa has been active since 1960 and has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. 
The Institute exists to promote research in all the disciplines in the humanities and social sciences within the wider region of eastern Africa – from Eritrea and Sudan in the north to Mozambique and Zimbabwe in the south, extending westwards to Rwanda, Burundi and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and including Madagascar and the islands of the Indian Ocean. 
It has a strong tradition of research in anthropology, archaeology, history and linguistics, and recent projects have embraced political, environmental and development studies, geography, public health, and art and performance. Its renovated research centre provides work space and accommodation for researchers and visiting academics, an excellent reference library and seminar / lecture facilities. 
The Institute offers financial support and logistical assistance to research projects, and runs a graduate attachment scheme. 
The Institute publishes the journal Azania: A Journal of African Archaeology, a leading archaeological periodical for the region, [four issues per year] and the Journal of Eastern African Studies [four issues per year]. Both are produced in conjunction with Taylor and Francis.
 
The Institute is sponsored by the British Academy and has its London office at their headquarters in Carlton House Terrace. It is a company limited by guarantee, not having a share capital, and is a registered charity. It is governed by its Council, which is based in London and is elected by its members.

The post holder will play a key role in continuing to transform the BIEA into an internationally recognised British Academy centre for research excellence in African studies. 
S/he would be responsible for
  • Pursuing his/her own research in areas of current strategic importance to the BIEA. This would strengthen the core team of full-time researchers at the BIEA whose work contributes innovative and policy-relevant scholarship in the humanities and social sciences as they concern East Africa in particular and Africa more generally. The Institute is keen to develop pioneering research of strategic importance and open up new research themes. It would like to intensify its research engagement across Eastern Africa, to include areas such as South Sudan, as well as extending its geographical range to include west and southern Africa.
  • Supporting graduate trainees and researchers at the Institute. The BIEA runs a graduate attachment scheme and offers research funding to individual researchers. The Assistant Director would be involved in organizing programmes and activities for the graduate attachees, as well as assisting researchers make solid academic contacts in the region.
  • Organising BIEA stands at international conferences. This will assist the Institute in deepening its connections with UK and international academic institutions and raise the BIEA’s profile in Britain through frequent participation in workshops and seminars in the UK, as well as through an extended range of individual links and collaborations.
  • Organising BIEA’s Nairobi seminars and workshops. These regular events are well attended by wide range of local academics and interested individuals
  • Developing the BIEA’s online strategy and ensuring that our website contains up-to-date information and recent seminar/lecture Working Papers and that podcasts reach a wide audience 
  • Deputising for the Director. 
The Assistant would be expected to make a major contribution to the administration of the Institute and to take responsibility for much of the day to day running. 
S/he would be expected to stand in for the Director in her absence
 
The successful candidate must possess a doctorate. 
Applications will be considered by candidates whose doctoral thesis has been submitted and who expect to have the viva voce examination on or before 1 April 2013, subject to supervisor’s reference. 
S/he should demonstrate a commitment to research in any of the subject areas of interest to the BIEA, including anthropology, archaeology, heritage studies, history, law, political science and public health, preferably in eastern Africa. 
S/he should be able to demonstrate the potential to publish their research work to international standards of excellence.
 
Administrative experience and good IT skills are essential. 
It would also be useful for the candidate to have a knowledge of the UK and / or eastern Africa academic research environment.

A full driving licence is essential.

The post holder will be expected to reside in Nairobi and will be based at the BIEA headquarters there. 
Salary package is negotiable, but will be in line with university pay scales for an early career position. 
Membership of a contributory pension scheme will be available. 
The BIEA will cover medical and travel insurance for the post holder.

Helen Keller International - Nutrition Manager Job in Nairobi Kenya

 Established in 1915 with Helen Keller as a founding trustee, Helen Keller International (HKI) works to save the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. 
Headquartered in New York City, HKI currently conducts programs in 21 countries in Africa and Asia as well as in the United States. HKI is known for sustainability, reliability, efficiency and the highest level of technical expertise in fighting and treating blindness and malnutrition. 
To accomplish its work, HKI builds the capacity of local governmental, civil society and private sector systems and infrastructure, and promotes the development of sustained, large-scale programs that deliver effective preventative and curative services for nutrition, control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and eye health. 
The hallmark of the organization’s work is its proven effectiveness in developing, testing and scaling-up health interventions, and integrating them within government and community structures. HKI is initiating program activities in Kenya and intends to build the program incrementally from a strong program base.

HKI is collaborating with NCBA/CLUSA to respond to the USAID Request for Application (RFA) Resilience and Economic Growth in the Arid Lands-Improving Resilience (REGAL – IR) Project in Kenya. 
The project objective is to enhance resilience of communities in five arid districts in Northern Kenya. 
REGAL will use a Community-Based Natural Resource Management Approach that strengthens communities, local community-based organizations and government capacity to better manage natural resources.

The Nutrition Manager will be part of the Senior Management Team of the project and work closely with the project team, local communities, and local government authorities/technicians to identify opportunities that build nutrition awareness and reduce the incidence of acute malnutrition (wasting) among under five children in the targeted districts. 
S/he will use research-based Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials and relevant Behavior Change Communication (BCC)methodologies to promote behavior change within communities that support improved nutrition practices. 
The Nutrition Manager will draw from different internal project specialists and external consultants to develop an integrated approach to building nutritionawareness based on the Essential Nutrition Actions (ENA) framework and will include home-based food production, meal preparation, as well as improved hygiene and sanitation practices that reduce the incidence of diarrhea. 
The Nutrition Manger will work through communities, local and national government institutions to jointly design, implement, monitor and evaluate nutrition activities to strengthen capacity for sustainable results.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the nutrition component of the Regal-IR project and represent HKI as a member of the Senior Management Team for the project; participate in the design and implementation of internal management systems for the project;
  • Ensure that gender gap analyses and research evidence informs the designs of all nutrition activities;
  • Ensure that REGAL-IR activities are done in partnership and complement ongoing activities supported by other projects (APHIA-Plus, UNICEF, WFP, etc);
  • Collaborate with project staff and key stakeholders to identify opportunities, project designs and activities that contribute to improve nutrition practices;
  • Together with project staff and other stakeholders in the government and communities, assess the nutritional status through research and informed baseline surveys; Develop project designs that ensure the highest potential for sustainable success in reducing the incidence of malnutrition;
  • Provide nutrition technical assistance to project staff provincial and district government counterparts, non-governmental partners and other stakeholders;
  • Coordinate and manage the use of research data to develop/refine BCC materials;
  • Ensure the pre-testing and revision of all BCC materials developed in areas of nutrition, homestead food production and Hygiene/sanitation; ensure that all BCC materials have technically correct messages and are in line with government policies.
  • Develop planning to introduce new BCC materials for use in the training identified partners within the government and communities. Develop and introduce appropriate tools for monitoring and evaluating BCC interventions through key stakeholders.
  • Design training programs (including need assessment, training curricula, lesson plans, and training materials) related to nutrition and lead the development of monitoring and evaluation plans following the trainings.
  • Collaborate with agriculture and animal husbandry staff in organizing and conducting research and surveys, that inform nutrition activities in home-based food production;
  • In collaboration with the project team, implement evidence-based project designs in home-based food production that meet micro-nutrient requirements to improve diet quality;
  • Work with Nutrition, Agriculture and Livestock training Officers and other Program Officers in all aspects of training development, including training curricula, lesson plans, and training materials;
  • Supervise the performance of HKI staff working within the nutrition component of the Regal-IR project;
  • Ensure accurate and timely project and financial reporting that comply with donor requirements for the project;
Qualifications and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Nutrition or related field with strong practical experience in implementing nutrition programming, at both the government and the community levels;
  • At least 6 years of related field experience in nutrition programming (e.g., micro nutrients,infant and young child feeding and women’s nutrition), including strong quantitative analytic skills; experience in programming nutrition initiatives through home-based garden, an advantage;
  • Practical experience with behavior change communication strategies in support of nutrition programs necessary;
  • Demonstrated track record in undertaking and supporting data collection, analysis and report and article writing, including publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong technical knowledge of nutrition and food security programs and issues in the developing world, particularly in Kenya, including demonstrated ability to track and disseminate new developments in the field;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with government, academia, and other stakeholders in Kenya at the national, provincial and district level.
  • Excellent oral and written English. Demonstrated ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents, and to prepare presentations and articles.
  • Excellent oral and written Kiswahili an advantage;
  • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with external contacts, as well as internal Colleagues;
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills that motivate staff and build team cohesion;
  • Proven planning and organizational skills;
  • Computer Literate in MS Operating Systems, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); 
  • Experience with Epi-info and SSPS an advantage;

Background
 
Aquaya is a San Francisco-based research and consulting organization dedicated to accelerating safe water delivery in developing countries. 
Our work includes a focus on effective water quality monitoring strategies and policies in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
 
Although contaminated drinking water is a primary cause of diarrheal disease, reliable and comprehensive information on water quality is limited in developing countries.
 
Through our Monitoring for Safe Water program, Aquaya will partner with relevant water sector stakeholders from at least five countries in sub-Saharan Africa to evaluate constraints to water quality testing in a range of low-resource contexts. 
We will enroll a total of 30 water supply and health surveillance agencies in a payments program designed to incentivize and evaluate achievement of testing targets. 
This three year applied research program is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
 
Position Description
 
Aquaya is seeking a Program Manager for our Monitoring for Safe Water Program. 
Under the direction of the Senior Program Manager, the Program Manager will be responsible for executing the overall program strategy and work plan and for supervising program staff. 
This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, where Aquaya maintains a regional office. 
We are seeking an ambitious candidate who can lead the expansion of Aquaya’s presence in Sub-Saharan Africa.
 
Responsibilities
  • Execute the overall project strategy and work plan
  • Maintain daily oversight over program activities
  • Directly supervise two Program Associates and an Office Administrator based in Nairobi
  • Participate in networking meetings with relevant water sector stakeholders
  • Organize program workshops and conference presentations

Position Summary: The Capacity Development Advisor will provide high-quality technical assistance to Pact’s capacity development initiatives in Kenya. 
The CD Advisor will also be responsible for documenting capacity development methodologies and approaches, and for supporting a strong Capacity Development Community of Practice. 
In addition, the CD Advisor will be expected to remain up-to-date with the state of the art in African capacity development, and represent Pact’s capacity development core competency both within the organization and externally. 
The CD Advisor will report to the Country Director, Pact, Inc. Kenya with additional guidance and direction from the Global Director for Capacity Development.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Technical Assistance to projects in Capacity Development Activities
  • Lead technical assistance to the FANIKISHA Program in the areas of institutional strengthening and advocacy capacity.
  • Support capacity development activities of KCSSP, PEACE II and other Pact, Inc. Kenya projects as requested.
  • Support in the design of new projects focusing on institutional strengthening and capacity development
  • Enable the implementation, mentoring and monitoring of Pact’s global standards for capacity development programming.
  • Lead technical writing for new business development related to capacity development.
  • Document capacity development approaches and methodologies used by Pact, Inc. Kenya.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Country Director, Pact, Inc. Kenya.
  • Collaborate with Pact’s technical experts to design, deliver and document high-quality, demand driven technical assistance to Pact programs.
  • Develop and implement trainings, workshops, participatory design processes and consultancies in capacity development for both public and private entities.
  • Collaboratively develop and maintain relationships on behalf of Pact’s Global CD Team with a priority on partnerships important to Pact global, regions and field offices.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Familiarity with principles of capacity development and their role in fostering social change.
  • Experience applying mainstream capacity development tools and approaches including, but not limited to Organizational Capacity Assessment, Institutional Strengthening Planning, Strategic Planning, Training of trainers
  • Strong facilitation, teaching and mentoring skills related to capacity development.
  • Ability to translate technical information into practical guidance and tools and effectively communicate these using print, electronic and presentation media.
  • Ability to work independently and to perform and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Sound networking and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively and collegially in teams.
  • Ability to establish and sustain positive relationships with Pact staff, in donor organizations and in peer organizations.
  • Sensitivity to other cultures and social systems, and genuine interest in capacity building responses to development issues.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, Quickbase, Desktop Publishing and Web 2.0 applications.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work, up to 50% of the time, in any of the regions in which Pact is operational.
  • Minimum 7 years work experience leading capacity development initiatives with both non-governmental, private and government in Kenya, additional regional experience preferred.

  • Proficiency French and/or Kiswahili preferred
