Qualifications:

Underwriting Manager
 
Qualifications:
  • A university degree plus at least 6 years of underwriting experience.
  • Should be result —oriented, a good team player, with self drive and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities:
  • To head the underwriting department and supervise the underwriting staff
  • Assess the risks proposed and advise management if they are insurable or not.
  • To advise on reinsurance matters.

Operations Manager

Job Title: Operations Manager     
 
Location: Kampala, Uganda
 
Purpose of the Job: Provide management, supervision and support to operations employees performing the daily activities of the operations department in line with company goals, practices and procedures. 

To contribute to the continuous improvement of the operations department by attending to and resolving concerns related to safe and efficient passenger transportation.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure that passenger transportation services are professionally provided
  • Plan transportation services for all bus routes, both long term and short term
  • Develop and monitor bus routes
  • Set schedules, expectations and guidelines for bus drivers and assistants
  • Ensure operations run smoothly and on time
  • Investigatory work concerning new routes and possible take-overs
  • Ensure effective crisis management and service issue resolution

Sanitation and Hygiene Assistant

Job Summary: To ensure reduced risks of diseases related to poor Water, Sanitation and Hygiene conditions in the refugee settlements and immediate host communities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor and advise sector members on general Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion project works in the project implementation area for strategic interventions.
  • Assess community Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion needs, and promote community led total Sanitation and Hygiene promotion through awareness creation and establishment or maintenance of functional Community Based Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion structures per village.
  • Create cooperative and harmonious relations with the community as well as local government authorities regarding promotion of best practices in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in Community and institutions.
  • Conduct regular Hygiene talks/education in schools, Health Centres, markets, restaurants and at Staff quarters.
  • Monitor construction and usage of existing Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion facilities through routine visits to homesteads/institutions and provide guidance through follow up on the activities of Community Health Workers, Community Hygiene Mobilisers/Promoters, and Hygiene Promotion focus groups in institutions and the community.
  • Liaise with the Water Technician to conduct monthly water quality surveillance/testing programme.
  • Conduct basic trainings and refresher trainings for the Community based Hygiene Promotion structures and make suggestions to improve the contents of the trainings.
  • Liaise with the PHC Supervisor and Water Technician to monitor and reinforce hygiene and sanitation promotion in institutions and at each water point / distribution point through Water Source Committee sensitisation and supervision.
  • Monitor WASH NFIs supply chain and stock levels in collaboration with stores and logistics.
  • Develop a community disease awareness system at community/institutional level and liaise with all Health centre In-charges to monitor and report on prevalence of WASH related diseases.
  • Compile weekly, monthly plans and reports on general Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion project works in the project implementation area for strategic interventions.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Certificate in Water Supply and Sanitation, Certificate in Environmental / Community health or any related field from a recognized institution
  • 2 years’ Experience in similar position
  • Experience in NGO setting an added advantage
Skills and Competencies:
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills

  • Expertise in planning, formulation, implementation, monitoring and reporting on humanitarian operations.

  • Make assessment, repair and perform general maintenance on all vehicles
  • Inspect vehicles brought to the workshop for panel beating and repair works
  • Report irregularities and equipment abuse to the Workshop supervisor for corrective action to be instituted in line with AAH Uganda guidelines.
  • Prepare annual workshop equipment inventory reports in line with reporting guidelines.
  • Tune up engines, ignition parts, clean and adjust carburettors, perform minor body repairs and respond to breakdowns.

Job Summary: To perform maintenance, installation, service and repair to a varied range of generating sets, diesel generator control systems and associated equipment including turbochargers and fuel injection equipment located at various site locations in Refugee Settlements in West Nile region in line with AAH Uganda and Donor Guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities;
  • Develop and maintain a generator maintenance program/plan for all field sites in line with set vehicle/machine operational guidelines.
  • Carry out fault diagnosis, repair and perform general maintenance on all generator equipment and adjustments of engines, hydraulics, electrical systems and installations.
  • Supervise and mentor apprentices and assistants under control carry out all works to required standards

Job Summary: The Hardware Technician will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the customer’s environment by supporting existing hardware. 

This position requires a high degree of customer service and problem solving skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Hardware Technician will be responsible for maintenance of hardware.
 
 
Duties will include, but not limited to the following:
  • Perform preventative maintenance on hardware with maintenance agreements
  • Troubleshoot & repair all hardware incidents in the agreed time as stipulated in maintenance agreement or on a time-and-material basis where applicable
  • Recommend solutions or replacement hardware if hardware is non-repairable
  • Complete incidents assigned to them daily
  • Identify all parts needed to resolve open incidents and submit to Finance Department for ordering
  • Review installation packets to ensure all hardware and software components are included to ensure a complete and professional installation
  • Training of installing the hardware & software
  • Fill out and complete the Weekly Support Report and complete weekly Timesheets
  • Manage spares/consumable inventory items
  • Make customer courtesy calls
  • Help generate additional revenue through suggestion of contracts, renewal of contracts and consumable items/supplies
  • Generate sales leads with existing customers for hardware equipment and/or software.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or other relevant Degree.
  • 3 + years Hardware Maintenance/Customer Service experience.
  • Demonstrated judgment in decision making and ability to judge when issues should be escalated.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with IT teams and various technical experts.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with customers at all levels
  • Working knowledge of network and hardware technology and ability to understand details of technical issues required
  • Able to be flexible for on-call work, after hours and weekends, as required by business and customer situations
  • Knowledge of Soldering, Printed Circuit Boards and Component Replacement

IUCN Project Coordinator Job in Mbale, Uganda


IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, helps the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges.
IUCN works on biodiversity, climate change, energy, human livelihoods and greening the world economy by supporting scientific research, managing field projects all over the world, and bringing governments, NGOs, the UN and companies together to develop policy, laws and best practice.
IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization, with more than 1,200 government and NGO members and almost 11,000 volunteer experts in some 160 countries. IUCN’s work is supported by over 1,000 staff in 45 offices and hundreds of partners in public, NGO and private sectors around the world.
 
One of the projects that IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) based in Nairobi is planning to implement (within its Water and Wetlands Programme) is a Resilience Framework to support Climate Change and Adaptation in the Mt Elgon Region of the Lake Victoria Basin. 
The Project will be implemented in collaboration with African Collaborative Centre for Earth System Science (ACCESS) and is funded by USAID. Its goal is to enhance coordination and adaptation action between stakeholders, using informed timely, accurate and comprehensive information to promote societal and ecological resilience to adverse climate impacts within the Mt Elgon Region, Lake Victoria Basin. 
The following are the specific project objectives: Improving scientific knowledge of Climate Change in Mt Elgon as water tower for Lake Victoria Basin; Demonstration of increased social and ecological resilience in hotspots of climate variability using adaption strategies including ecosystem based adaptation actions; Integrating evidence from adaptation approaches into policies across sectors; and Enhancing learning on climate change adaptation strategies at local and regional levels.

Executive Director

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) is a semi—autonomous body established by an Act of Parliament (1998) to promote the production of reliable official statistics and ensure the development and maintenance of the National Statistical System (NSS).

The Bureau’s core business includes among others the Production, Coordination and Dissemination of official statistics to support the national and local government planning processes.

The Bureau is seeking to recruit a self-motivated, results-oriented, qualified and dynamic Ugandan of proven integrity to fill the position of Executive Director who is the Chief Executive of the Bureau.

Executive Director

Reports To: Board of Directors

Type of Appointment: Contract Appointment of 4 years renew able once.

Role: To provide technical, professional and managerial guidance in the production and development of statistics in line with the NSS.

Key result Areas:

The roles of Executive Director will include the following:
  1. Manage all the technical operations of the Bureau with regard to planning, production and coordination both at the planning and administrative level in formulation of programmes for statistical production and development;
  2. Coordinate the Bureau and the National Statistical System;
  3. Sit on the Board of Directors and be responsible for informing the board on the levels of implementation of Bureau policies;

Qualifications:
  1. Must possess an honours degree and post-graduate training in Statistics, Economics with Statistics, Quantitative Economics, Mathematics with Economics, Population Studies or other related field from recognised institution.
  2. Possession of a PhD in a relevant field will be an added ad vantage Experience:
  • Fifteen (15) years professional working experience with at least 6 years at a senior managerial level in a Government Department or Reputable Agency in the field of Statistical production and Policy Analysis;
  • Knowledge and exposure to Financial Management and Budgeting Tools;
  • Adequate exposure in interfacing with Accounting Officers of the MDAs and Higher Local Governments; and
  • Demonstrated ability / experience of networking with other institutions.

 The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) is a not-for-profit subregional organization of the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of eleven countries: Burundi, D.R. Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. 
ASARECA’s mission is promoting economic growth, fighting poverty, reducing hunger and enhancing resources through regional collective action in agricultural research for development.

Gender Specialist

We are seeking to recruit for a Gender Specialist to steer implementation of the ASARECA gender mainstreaming strategy. 
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Gender Specialist will be charged with implementation of the gender mainstreaming strategy and ‘Champion’ the process in ASARECA.

Key Tasks
  • Support the strengthening of gender mainstreaming in ASARECA’s programmes and projects which includes use of gender criteria in project proposals, reporting and evaluation, and revision of the gender criteria where appropriate
  • Develop, propose and undertake gender mainstreaming initiatives in the region including providing technical backstopping towards the development of a gender strategy in each of the NARI’s in the 11 ASARECA countries
  • Support ASARECA and its partners to formulate gender responsive policies to enhance gender mainstreaming in agricultural research
  • Identify and build capacity of gender quality assurance teams at appropriate levels in each NARS of ASARECA.
  • Coordinate and maintain a close working relationship and strong communication channels with ASARECA stakeholders
  • Serve as ASARECA’s contact point and partner with social and gender policy experts in the ECA region and consequently build a network for addressing issues of regional priority in relation to gender.
  • Identify individuals who can be champions of change in partner organizations in order to enhance institutional commitment at ASARECA.
Qualification and experience
  • The person will have a University degree in Gender or Development studies, Social sciences, Humanitarian studies or related field.
  • The person will have 5 years progressive experience in application of gender mainstreaming in programmes and projects in agricultural research for development in some or all of the ASARECA member countries with proven qualities of synthesis and strong ability to analyze, prepare and present written materials in excellent English. Knowledge of French is desirable.

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Scientist/Uganda Country Representative to be based at its Country Office in Kampala, Uganda. Reporting to the Regional Coordinator-East Africa, the incumbent will seek to build strong partnerships with institutions and development partners based in Uganda and work together to generate tree-based solutions to the problems of rural poverty, hunger and environmental degradation. 
The principal role of the Country Representative is to coordinate the development of a comprehensive agroforestry research for development programme for ICRAF in Uganda. 
This includes capacity strengthening, mobilizing resources for collaborative research with Ugandan institutions and other national agroforestry and land management programmes in the Eastern Africa Region. 
The incumbent will promote collaborative research for development activities with NARS and other relevant institutions such as educational institutions, extension providers, NGOs, CBOs and the private sector in the country. 
The research agenda will include innovative research on climate change and agro-biodiversity, as well as participatory evaluation and dissemination of the best-bet land management practices and agroforestry innovations that address issues of soil fertility, food security and environmental concerns in the context of opportunities and constraints to scaling up the wide adoption of agroforestry technologies among smallholder farmers. 
The job specifically includes the following duties and responsibilities to be carried out under the overall guidance of the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and GRP leaders with projects in Uganda, and in effective partnership with appropriate institutions in the country:
  • Plan and execute a collaborative agroforestry research for development agenda in Uganda;
  • Write scientific articles and syntheses for publishing;
  • Plan and implement an effective resource mobilization strategy aimed at supporting a significant expansion of the ICRAF-Uganda- project portfolio;
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with government, donors, farmer organizations, NGOs, the private sector, education and research institutions (including other CGIAR centers) and international agencies with a view to institutionalize land management and agroforestry research and development in the country;
  • Build the capacity of young scientists;
  • Liaise with other East & Central Africa regional and national programme scientists and Uganda institutions for technical exchange and collaboration;
  • Analyze, interpret, and report research and development results to ICRAF, donors and other development partners. As a research for development institution, ICRAF attaches emphasis on generating international public goods. Thus it attaches great importance to reporting of findings and experiences through peer reviewed articles and similar media;
  • Prepare technical and policy reviews on specific subject areas with emphasis on future land management and agroforestry research and development needs in Uganda;
  • Supervise and participate in the preparation of training materials and participate in training courses as a resource person;
  • Assist in the preparation, implementation and management of the regional plan of work and budget;
  • Supervise, provide logistical support and report on all ICRAF activities in Uganda, including financial and administrative oversight and
  • Undertake any other tasks as may be assigned by the Regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa
Requirements
  • PhD in Agroforestry or Natural Resource management
  • At least five (5) years hands-on field experience in managing interdisciplinary programmes and multi-disciplinary staff, and projects focusing on the rural poor, ideally with experience in Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular, Uganda;
  • Experience in designing and implementing multi-institutional programmes and projects;
  • Proven ability to publish scientific articles in refereed journals;
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of the role of science in contributing to development in rural areas;
  • Demonstrated English writing skills, and proven ability to contribute to the research and development literature;
  • Excellent oral presentation skills and computer literacy; and
  • Proven resource mobilization skills including proven evidence of ability to raise funds.
