Job Title: Programme Officer - Governance and Democracy -Parliamentary Liaison Desk

Job Summary

The Catholic Justice and Peace Commission, is the executive organ of the Kenya Episcopal Conference that deals with Justice and Peace issues. It fulfils the Conference’s objectives to promote justice, peace and good governance in Kenya. 
The Commission is looking for a programme officer to provide effective management and implementations of national level interventions in research, lobbying and advocacy in legislation and policy in Kenya.

Governance & Democracy-Parliamentary Liaison Desk aims at facilitating good governance and social justice initiatives in Kenya. The programme focuses on Transparency in Legislation and Electoral Reforms, to promote political accountability in public institutions and to contribute to the promotion of ethical values in citizens’ engagement in political processes. 
Key priorities of the programme are contribution to development of legal framework to enhance transparency and accountability, monitor implementation of the Constitution, and promote citizen participation in political and legislative process.

Under the supervision of the Head of Commission, the programme officer will be in charge of development and administration of strategies and projects in the Governance and Democracy programme objectives and KEC strategic plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head of Commission the programme officer shall;

1. Programme Management.
  • Design projects, work plans/schedules and ensure their successful implementation to achieve overall programme objectives and KEC strategic goals of CJPC governance and democracy programme.
  • Ensure timely programme reports; monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Fundraise for the governance and democracy projects, identification of budgets gaps and ensure timely reports to donors and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support to dioceses and ensure that technical documents of the programmes are fully reviewed, discussed and appropriately disseminated. This task includes support to research, data collection and reports.
  • Oversee the coordination of programme logistical work including preparation of meetings, forums, workshops, trainings and production of reports/minutes thereto
2. Advisory/ Strategy Development
  • Define programmes priorities and objectives and communicate to staff and partners for mutual understanding and ownership.
  • Provide leadership in the thinking and support development of CJPC national office, national strategies and advocacy campaigns for citizen participation in political and governance processes
3. Management of CJPC partners/partnerships
  • Develop links and share experiences with relevant stakeholders to promote and mainstream good governance to achieve KEC-CJPC vision and mission.
  • Provide technical support to the dioceses and other partners in development of sound policies for transparent and accountable social reforms initiatives.
  • Work with relevant partner coalitions and networks to develop collaborative programme strategies, resource mobilization, concerted efforts and collective results for desired impact on good governance in Kenya.
4. Resource Mobilization
  • Develop exceptional proposals and/or concepts for financial support and sustainability of the programme.
  • Support research and securing of donors, donor advocacy, attend meetings and assist respond to correspondences relating to support in relation to the programme.
Qualifications
  • Hold a law, or political science degree from a recognized university
  • At least three (3) years of proven experience in;
  • Coordination of governance and Democracy programmes in particular Constitutional reforms, Parliamentary Liaison project, and citizen participation in political and governance processes.
  • Legislative drafting – development of laws/policies.
  • Participatory community based approaches and dissemination strategies
  • Resource mobilization ( Proposal writing and financial reporting)
  • Research and information analysis.
  • Must be a Catholic with recommendation of a Parish Priest.
Competencies
  • Good knowledge on concepts of sustainable development, socio economic rights, good governance and policy making.
  • Understanding of the environment KEC-CJPC operates, vision, mission and objectives.
  • Extensive knowledge of Kenya’s governance institutions, their decision making procedures and process of institution capacity strengthening.
  • Willing to undertake regular field and other external visits and ability to interact with different stakeholders from citizenry to bilateral and multilateral donors.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills both in English and Kiswahili.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, able to prioritize and consistently produce high standard work.
  • Strong networking skills, leadership skills and team player.

Legal Officer

Job Specification

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the officer will be responsible for the preparation of legal opinions and offering guidance on legal issues/aspects of the University.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants for the position of Legal Officer should:
  • Be a holder of a Bachelors degree ¡n Law (LLB) from a recognized University.
  • Must be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practicing certificate.
  • Have at least five (5) years experience handling legal matters in a large and reputable organization with experience in civil and criminal litigation, commercial law, labour law, insurance and conveyance.
  • Must be conversant with the Public Procurement and Disposal Act and Regulations and all labour laws.
  • Have experience in contract negotiations and drafting.
  • Demonstrate high degree of professional competence in legal work and administrative capability in work performance and results.
  • He/She should not be more than 35 years of age.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Bea person of outstanding honesty and integrity with high moral and ethical values.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preparation of legal opinions and offering guidance on legal matters.
  • Monitoring compliance with the legal and regulatory framework.
  • Reviewing, drafting, negotiating, securing and administering Licenses, Agreements and Contracts in which the University may be involved in.
  • Safeguarding the University from possible litigation by offering legal counsel to the University Management and staff.
  • Coordinating the representation of the University in courts in the event of litigations.
  • Facilitating dispute resolution process between various Departments and Units in the University.
  • Provision and handling of all in-house legal matters of the University.
  • Preparation of staff and students indemnities.
  • Formulation of statutes that govern the conduct of discipline of staff and students from time to time as may be deemed necessary.
  • Preparation of updates to the management in relation to the reviews and interpretations of University statutes.
  • Formulation and guidance on the preparation of documents such as Memoranda of Understanding and Collaboration agreements between the University and external parties.
  • Crafting charges for staff and students violating the regulations governing the conduct and discipline of staff and students.
  • Ensuring that the University adheres to the laid down procedures and regulations in employee matters, disciplinary measures and any other matter which has legal implications.
Lecturer of Missiology/Mission Studies

Applicants must be holders of PhD degree in Missiology/Mission Studies from a recognized University.

In addition the applicant should:
  • Have at least five years of teaching as an Assistant Lecturer.
  • Published at least (3) papers in the area of specialization in refereed journals.
  • Have ability to attract research funding.
  • Be affiliated to a related professional body.
  • Provide three referees one of whom must be his/her pastor.

To accomplish this mission, Care of Creation Kenya (CCK) is seeking to employ a qualified individual for the following position:

Job Title: Project Manager for Biblically - Based Community Development

Location: Kijabe (Care of Creation Kenya office at Moffat Bible College)

Reports To: The Executive Director

General Summary:

This person will promote a God-centered approach to environmental stewardship and provide competent oversight for community development and educational initiatives undertaken by Care of Creation Kenya (CCK).

Primary responsibilities will involve planning, the coordination of CCK staff and demonstrations, and the administration of training activities for Churches, schools, farmers and community groups in the areas of forestry and Farming God’s Way.

Essential Qualifications
  • Mature Christian with unquestioned personal integrity and character
  • A heart for ministering to farmers, women, and local communities
  • Excellent teaching skills, including proficiency in teaching from Scripture, and demonstrated work experience in teaching and/or community development.
  • Excellent management, planning and administrative skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili
  • Strong computer proficiency (including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.)
  • Able to keep detailed records and write detailed reports
  • A self starter who takes initiative and requires little supervision

  • Plan, organize and conduct training seminars in cooperation with the Executive Director.
  • Mobilize and encourage groups / communities / CCK partners to take action on environmental matters.
  • Provide biblically-based and scientifically sound teaching to various audiences.
  • Develop and conduct follow-up and monitoring activities with farmers, schools, churches, community groups, partners
  • Establish healthy and ongoing relationships with the same
Management / Administration / Communication
  • Keep track of records, maintain project databases and produce reports
  • Assist with grant-writing
  • Provide management and oversight for staff members working in CCK’s indigenous tree nursery and farming demonstration
  • Facilitate the proper functioning and management of the entire demonstration site
  • Facilitate the efficiency of verbal and email communication between staff members and with schools, farmers, communities, churches or other CCK partners.

He will supervise the other Kadhis under him.

(iii) Be able to effectively communicate in English, Kiswahili and Arabic;

(iv) Be of good conduct in accordance with the Islamic faith; and

(v) Be proficient in computer applications.

(vi) Possess the qualifications set out in Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.

In addition, the candidate must possess excellent interpersonal qualities, drafting, negotiation, communication, supervisory, leadership/managerial skills as well as be a team player.

The successful candidate will deputize the Chief Kadhi of the country.

He shall also supervise the other Kadhis under him.

Job Summary

The Jesuit Province of Eastern Africa seeks a Communications Officer working in the Development Office beginning January 2012.

The Development Office fundraises for Jesuits in Eastern Africa.

The Communications Officer will:
  1. Establish a communications office
  2. Define a communications strategy for the development office
  3. Implement the communications strategy
  4. Coach individuals who would take up communications responsibilities in the development office.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in publication design and writing/editing for a magazine, newspaper or newsletter
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills in the English language (with a keen appreciation for different audiences)
  • Experience in web-design, maintenance of web-sites, use of e-communication tools
  • Familiarity with fundraising/advancement work
  • A degree in journalism or communications, knowledge of database management and familiarity with the Jesuits and the Catholic Church would be an added advantage
