Forestry Information Manager

Location: Kilifi head office with < 40% field work and travel

Introduction: Komaza is looking for a full-time Forestry Information Manager based out of its Kilifi, Kenya office to lead a field based team of Forestry Information Associates who measure and evaluate our tree inventory in the thousands of tree farms located in Kilifi county, Kenya.
 
Several teams operate day to day in the field to support Komaza’s operations.

The Forestry Information team is crucial in collecting the data necessary to guide the senior leadership team in critical decision making.

The Role: Komaza’s Field Information department is a highly mobile team which specializes in the collection of data from literally thousands of tree farms. 

The data is collected using different capturing methods by teams on Motorbikes who live and breathe “Data”.

The Manager of this team has to be an exceptional team-leader who plans and organizes the work schedules of the various team members and prioritizes various data needs by other teams. 

This role requires somebody who always thinks “How can I make the data collection more effective?” “Which other data do we have to collect?” “How can I support the other teams better?”

This role is partially field based and requires somebody who is confident and flexible when interacting with local farmers and team members.

As the Forestry Information Manager, a typical day might include:
  • Plan and organize the work schedule for the team
  • Upload forestry information into the IMS
  • Generate reports and conduct analyses
  • Collaborate with case management team
  • Visit farms and do fact checking on location

Kenya Forest Service (KFS) - Director Job in Kenya

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) is a State Corporation established by the Forests Act 2005.

Its mandate is to conserve, develop and sustainably manage forests and allied resources for environmental stability and the social-economic development of the people of Kenya.
 
In line with the provisions of the Forests Act 2005, the Service is seeking to recruit a Director who will be the Chief Executive Officer of the Service reporting to the Board of Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Director shall be the Chief Executive officer of the Service responsible for the overall day to day management of the Service, overall leadership and implementation of the Service vision, mission and strategic Goals.
  • Facilitating the operations of the Board of Directors and be a link between the Board and staff.
  • The Director will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Board decisions.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidelines for the management, conservation and utilisation of all forests in the country
  • To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date national forest information systems, plans and management systems.
  • Collaborate with research institutions in identifying research needs and applying research findings.
  • Promote national interests and compliance in relation to international forest conventions and principles.
  • Advise on establishment of, determination and management of national forests as well as provisional forests in consultation with the forest owners
  • Implementation of corporate policies and strategies to ensure that the corporate vision and mission is realized.
  • Oversee effective management of human capital for optimal productivity.
  • Act as the principal spokesperson of the Service ensuring its policies, vision, mission and services are positively understood by all stakeholders
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of suitable performance management metrics and reporting structures to achieve set performance targets.
  • Oversee the management of the Kenya forestry college
  • Ensure all business systems, processes and operations are effective and comply with applicable statutory provisions.
  • Manage the overall corporate risk while facilitating improvement in each functional area, to balance budgets and resource mix in order to provide the best return on investment in line with organizational growth.
  • Grow and efficiently manage the Service’s resources for sustainable corporate growth and long term viability
Academic Qualifications and Experience
 
In order to be considered the applicant must:
  • Have at least fifteen (15) year’s knowledge and experience in the field of forestry, seven (7) of which must have been in a senior management position within a large reputable organization in the private or public sector.
  • Have an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in the field of forestry.
  • Have a postgraduate degree in a relevant knowledge area – forest management, business management, strategic management, project management, public administration, environmental management etc.
  • Be a member of the Forestry Society of Kenya (FSK) or a similar relevant professional body in good standing
  • Be a person of high integrity who meets the requirements of Chapter six of the Constitution.
  • Have been cleared by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
  • Have a valid certificate of good conduct.
  • Have been cleared by the Ethics and Anti-corruption commission (EACC).
  • Have a valid tax compliance certificate
Key Skills and Competencies
 
The applicant must demonstrate an understanding of Government priorities & Mwongozo code of Governance for state corporations. 

An applicant should demonstrate the capability to manage risks and operate within the complex socio-economic environment of the Forestry sector. 

An applicant should have a distinguished track record in his/her respective field, be able to motivate staff, resilient and able to put the Service on a sound financial footing, largely independent of Government support. 

An applicant needs to be passionate, able to recognize policy trade-offs resulting from sustainable management and public good elements of conservation as well as initiate and manage change.

African Forest Forum (AFF) - Programme Officer Job in Nairobi Kenya

 The African Forest Forum (AFF) is an association of individuals who share the pursuit and commitment to the sustainable management, use and conservation of the forest and tree resources of Africa for the betterment of the socio-economic wellbeing of its people and for the stability and improvement of its environment.
The purpose of AFF is to provide a platform and create an enabling environment for independent and objective analysis, advocacy and advice on all relevant policy and technical issues pertaining to achieving sustainable management, use and conservation of Africa’s forest and tree resources as part of efforts to reduce poverty, protect the environment and promote economic and social development.

The position

The African Forest Forum is recruiting for the position of a Programme Officer to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, or at some other location, reporting to the Executive Secretary through the Senior Programme Officer.

 Duties and responsibilities

To assist the Senior Programme Officer in the coordination and implementation of activities on:
  • Climate change as it relates to forest resources and livelihoods;
  • The fuel-fibre-food nexus;
  • Forest-water relations.
To assist the Senior Programme Officer on any other duties and responsibilities as may be directed by the Executive Secretary.
 
To represent the AFF, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, on matters relating to the above duties, and on any other matters as directed by the Executive Secretary and the Governing Council of AFF.

Minimum qualifications and skills
  • Masters degree in forestry, environment,  natural resources management or related area,  plus a minimum of 5 years of post masters experience;
  • Must have the capacity and demonstrated experience in the application of forest science to the management of natural resources;
  • Must  be a good team player;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French with a working knowledge of English.
  • Female applicants from the Congo Basin countries  have an advantage.

About the position

ICRAF seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Senior Scientist: Capacity Development to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Reporting to the Deputy Director General responsible for Partnerships and Impact.
The incumbent will provide leadership in the following key areas which are illustrated in ICRAF’s capacity development strategy:
  • Assess partner needs and identify capacity constraints;
  • Develop and implement intervention programmes and projects for agroforestry capacity development (including methods and tools for assessing success/impact);
  • Capture the capacity development aspects from CGIAR Research Programmes (CRPs) and develop effective strategies for implementation and monitoring them in partnership with sister CGIAR centres and partners
  • Incorporate the partner capacity needs into resource mobilization proposals for donor support;
  • Enhance coordination and quality management of ICRAF’s capacity development work;
  • Support the development of learning resources and curricula;
  • Undertake research on capacity development in agroforestry and closely related areas and organizations; and
  • Work with ICRAF scientists to strengthen partner capacity.
Requirements
  • PhD in Agroforestry, Agriculture, Forestry, or other relevant discipline with specialization in environment or natural sciences
  • A minimum of ten years post-graduation experience in capacity development in a tropical developing country
  • Demonstrated track record of research, publishing and evaluation in the capacity development field at international level
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required; ability to communicate in Spanish and/or French would be an added advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially in a multicultural environment
  • Excellent facilitation skills
Of added advantage would be:
  • Qualifications and/or experience in education and educational technology
  • Familiarity with the CGIAR system
  • Familiarity with agriculture and forestry in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Expression of Interest to Prepare an Annotated Bibliography of Africa PFM Learning


The Governments of Finland and Kenya are executing the Miti Mingi Maisha Bora (MMMB) programme of support to forest sector reform.


The objective is to reduce poverty by ensuring that the forest sector contributes to improving the lives of the poor while restoring the environment and aiding the economic recovery growth of Kenya within the context of Vision 2030.


Through MMMB, Kenya Forest Service (KFS) invites expression of interests from qualified NGOs to carry out the work indicated below.


KFS is therefore inviting eligible and qualified firms to express their interest to prepare an annotated bibliography of PFM learning in Africa.


To be eligible, the firms must meet the following minimum criteria:


1. Provide statutory registration documents i.e Copies of PIN, VAT Reg., Cert. of Incorporation/Reg., Tax clearance certificate, Physical address and telephone contact.


2. Provide detailed organization profile


3. Demonstrate financial and organizational strengths by attaching audited accounts for the last two years.


4. Provide relevant experience in the field of PFM planning and implementation management.


5. Provide names and C.Vs of staff expected to undertake the assignment giving their qualifications.


6. Previous experience in Natural Resources or related field in Kenya is an asset.
