Technical Assistant

 
Job Title: Technical Assistant
Department: Agronomy
 
Reports To: Area  Manager   
 
Overall Responsibility: Reporting to the Area Manager the position will be responsible for ensuring availability of safe, high quality raw materials from company owned, leased or contracted farms / out growers in support of factory operations in order to ensure achievement of company business objectives. 
 
This includes assisting farm operations and the implementation of the seeding, planting, weeding, spraying and harvest plans for contracted farmers.

Key Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
 
1. Implementing the Agronomy supplies plan and  recruitment of farmers
  • Lead in development of field extension/advisory services with special attention to increase in production
  • In liaison with the Area Manager extension of research and development and promoting best practice
  • Provide technical advice on design elements to strengthen
  • Ensure and maintain good relations between farmers and Vert.
  • Communication with farmers
  • Organize meetings with farmers
2. Monitoring , supporting and advising farmers
  • Identify the farmers training needs  
  • Organize, and conduct technical meetings and training activities  
  • Delivery of technical workshops, consultations, seminars and training sessions  for farmers
  • Support the strengthening relationship between Vert Limited and the farmers
  • Train the out growers on ICPM and other areas of the quality management system
  • Provide the Area Agronomist with weekly reports on production and other matters as outlined   in the QMS
  • Prepare beds, planting, watering, and harvesting, as well as amending the soil, weeding, thinning, and pest and disease prevention and control
3. Coordinating harvest and delivery of farm producer 
  • Provide up-to-date harvesting and crop management information; 
  • Facilitate communications between farmers and the factory  for efficient collaboration
  • Help farmers form their own organizations in order to achieve economies of scale
  • Ensure that Harvesting Projections are met through accurate projection of  planting   programs, and that any low or high projection based on the day to day running of the blocks under cultivation are communicated to the Area Manager on timely basis .
  • Monitor all harvestings ensuring that quantities are as projected with high degrees of confidence.
4. Reporting  and follow up
  • Compile Area profile –understanding of the conditions of the particular area as well as the dynamics of change (a description of the farming system, farm types and sizes, market outlets, input supply sources, agro-processors, service providers and successful farmers and rural entrepreneurs situated in the area).
  • Compile and analyze data on farm enterprise
  • Report on crop performance in liaison with other stakeholders subject to agreed deliverables   
  • Prepare  clear and concise projections and actual supplies reports
  • Provide  the Area Manager  with weekly reports on production and other matters as outlined in the QMS
Academic qualifications
  • Diploma or equivalent (minimum course duration of two years)
  • A drivers license is required
Experience required
  • Two (2) years working experience in  agricultural or horticultural production environment

Purpose of Role:

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Science degree in Agriculture or a related field
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in cereal production or managing Out growers schemes
  • Knowledge on IS0 quality management systems
  • Knowledge on machinery involved in production operations like planting, spraying and harvesting.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a research assistant to run animal trials on feed interventions, animal productivity and greenhouse gas emissions from livestock systems.
 
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to livestock research for the developing world. 
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Responsibilities

The candidate will contribute to ongoing research projects which focus on identifying the conditions that enable and constrain East African dairy producers in adopting climate smart agriculture practices. 
The research team aims to develop specific baseline estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock and livestock related products such as manure, identify effects of livestock systems on water quality and water quantity and identify potential mitigation practices that also improve dairy/beef production in smallholder systems. 
The candidate is expected to work within an international dynamic team in ILRI’s Mazingira Centre (mazingira.ilri.org).
The position entails a significant component  of hands-on work including handling of and sampling from large and small ruminants 
The candidate will contribute to this by undertaking the following activities:
  • Planning, participation and oversight of ruminant research trials
  • To coordinate and assist in day to day running and maintenance of animal facilities
  • To collect biological samples (eg. faeces, urine, and rumen liquor), carry out greenhouse gas flux measurements from ruminants in experimental trials, under the guidance of senior project staff
  • To assist with data entry and processing (data organization, calculation of greenhouse gas fluxes from animal respiration chambers)
  • To maintain relationships with different stakeholders including farmers and farmer groups, suppliers and ILRI ancillary staff, in order to facilitate the efficient prosecution of research trials
  • Assisting Higher Degree (Research) students
  • Other such duties as deemed consistent with the position by supervisor
Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:
  • A diploma in agriculture related science from a recognized institution with a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a research/teaching facility or a commercial farm. A BSc degree in agriculture will be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated understanding of ruminant nutrition
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in animal handling and carry out basic farm routine operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collegially with technical and scientific staff and students with minimal supervision
  • Good skills in written and spoken English
Terms of Appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. 
The position is on a 1-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Inades-Formation is a pan African organization working in ten (10) African Countries namely; Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Cote D’Ivoire, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Togo and DR Congo.

In Kenya, the offices are situated in Machakos town – approximately 60 km east of Nairobi.
 
Job Summary: INADES-Formation Kenya is implementing the Kenya Livestock Enhancement (KSALES) Project funded by USDA through Land O’ Lakes on Livestock Farmer Field schools and On Farm infrastructure. 

Inades-Formation Kenya thus seeks to recruit a suitable candidate to fill two positions of a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for this project. 

 
The positions will only be filled on receipt of the anticipated funding. The Monitoring & Evaluation Officer will monitor day-to-day project activities to ensure that the project maintains adequate level and coverage of output and outcomes indicators. 

The M&E Officer will be the key focal person to ensure that M&E data are of the required quality and archived based on sound M&E practices. 

The M&E Officer will provide direct technical support to project officers.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities
  • Develop the overall framework of the monitoring and evaluation activities
  • Manage and maintain performance monitoring systems and processes in the organization
  • Responsible for the planning process and activity monitoring reporting
  • Guide and coordinate the review of programme log frames
  • Responsible for the collection and analysis of quality data of project activities, outcomes and impacts.
  • Design and carry out outcome and impact assessments to assess project interventions, outcomes and impact with project assisted beneficiaries
  • Participate in the development of M&E data collection tracking tools;
  • Regular progress and performance monitoring on the achievement of the KSALES project targets and results on all the projects’ performance indicators,
  • Coordinate with the programs manger to ensure data needs and reporting requirements are met
  • Conduct periodic data collection, verification, and analysis of the project to check any significant deviations from the agreed upon M&E data stipulated on the grants agreement.
  • Responsible for identifying 2-3 success stories per quarter demonstrating the success of beneficiaries or value chain drivers as a result of the Project intervention.
  • Support documentation of verification documents and evidence for the project implementation.
  • Oversee and execute the monitoring and evaluation activities included in the K-SALES Project, with particular focus on results and impacts as well as in lesson learning;
Qualifications
 
Interested candidates should have the following qualifications and competencies:
  • Be a degree, Diploma or professional certification holder in M&E or related
  • Degree in Livestock production, animal health or Agriculture
  • A minimum of 5 years of Leading Monitoring and Evaluation experience
  • At least five years working experience with exposure to livestock production and/or related initiatives.
  • Competence in data collection and analysis using SPSS and/or other statistical packages, use of spreadsheets and computer spreadsheet based monitoring and reporting tables and tools.
  • Knowledge on Livestock Farmer Field Schools will be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated experience in working with community groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, knowledge of Kamba language will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of M&E tools, techniques, documentation
  • Proven capacity to work independently and to take initiatives
  • A valid driving and riding license with at least 5 years’ experience practical driving/riding

Overview of the Job: Reporting to the Market Linkages & Cooperatives Manager, the ideal candidate is expected to support the ML&COOP Manager in organizing farmers; linking farmers/cooperatives to markets; registering cooperatives; strategic planning; capacity building and development of cooperative leaders; and in setting up accounting, bookkeeping and administrative systems for cooperatives.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Assist in researching and locating markets for Nuru farmers’ produce and develop and implement strategy to link Nuru farmers & cooperatives to fair markets.
  • Assist in management of aggregation, buying, storing, and selling operations and staff during harvest and buying season.
  • Research and explore funding and investment opportunities for improving or expanding Nuru’s market linkage operations.
  • Inform Nuru Kenya and organized farmers on cooperative establishment in Kenya including topics such as laws and policies, best practices, registration procedures, etc.
  • Assist the Agriculture and Financial Inclusion Program staff with the organization of farmers into cooperatives and facilitate the registration of cooperatives.
  • Deliver trainings for rural cooperative capacity-building; including cooperative management, staffing plans, democratic leadership and cooperative business plan development.
  • Help Nuru Kenya and cooperative societies in setting up and maintaining accounting and record keeping systems with strong financial controls.
  • Execute financial models that appropriately balance farmer welfare and organizational sustainability for Nuru Kenya’s market linkage and agricultural loan initiatives.
  • Liaise with government cooperative development and marketing offices and resolve any policy and administrative issues that may arise.
  • Deputize the ML & Coop Manager when absent and as directed and to competently perform all assigned/ delegated duties
  • Supervise Cooperatives Managers and Accountant
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:
  • BSC in Cooperative Management, Agribusiness Management or any other related course.
  • 5-6 years of experience in operations, management and/or development of agricultural cooperative societies
  • Strong quantitative skills; specifically demonstrated ability to create and execute financial models and business plans
  • Experience with agribusiness or cereal markets in Kenya
  • Detailed understanding of challenges facing small scale farmers, grain/agricultural produce markets and cooperatives in Kenya
  • Strong computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office suits 
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to work independently
  • Desire to work with rural farmers in field conditions

Spray Supervisor

Vacancy: Spray Supervisor

Job Purpose: 
The purpose of this position is to increase production in terms of the stems shipped by ensuring that no stems have been rejected due to pests and diseases and that harvested crops meet the set standards in respect to pests and diseases and good Agricultural standards.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Proper and timely Application of chemicals in accordance with the spray plans and prevailing problems.
  • Requesting, Collecting and ensuring the proper mixing of chemicals for the purpose of sprays.
  • Ensuring that the Spray changing room is kept clean at all times.
  • You have the responsibility to ensure that the pump operators follow the instruction given so as to protect the spray machines and the spray system.
  • It is your responsibility to make sure that the Spray system: both the CSU, knapsacks and the Motorized sprayers are working properly and that any breakdown is reported in time.
  • Constantly train by demonstrating and guiding the Spray staff. Monitor their performance, in order to meet the required targets and standards.
  • Follow the laid down procedures of materials, tools and equipment requisition, collection and return to and from the stores respectively. Immediately reporting to the Management in case of any miss-operating or lost tools or equipment.
  • To issue to the workforce the necessary tools and PPE required for work and keep a record of it.
  • Ensure that the necessary PPE is properly worn by all workers in your department at all times
  • Ensure that all Spray records are properly kept and are available to the management to improve decision making.
  • Participate during monthly stock take and stock reconciliation to ensure no variances.
  • Ensure that the tools, equipment, structures are always properly handled and maintained. These must be properly cleaned after use. This should be reflected through the control in spray equipment repairs.
  • Ensure punctuality, discipline and good time management of the workforce. Control time wastage to ensure targets are met.
  • Follow with the Human Resources office on the matters concerning workforce recruitment, sickness, and absenteeism, in discipline and any other welfare issues.
  • Assist in making provisions for the sections requirements in the overall production department’s budget.
  • Before off duties, hand over proper written instructions to your acting Supervisor.
  • Liaise with other sections and departments (grading, irrigation, spraying, maintenance, purchasing/stores) to ensure that the set product quality standards are always met.
  • Develop and manage highly motivated Spray team.
  • Ensure labour availability through proper leave planning and off duty scheduling
  • Carry out periodic evaluation of the Spray team and develop appropriate training plans.
  • Follow up on implementation of the safe use, technical and other trainings offered for the benefit of good agricultural practices.
  • Ensure discipline is maintained and that grievance and disciplinary cases are handled on time.
  • Ensure the production process always conforms to environmental standards as laid down by KFC.
  • Implement and maintain proper control and work measurement systems that will ensure that production functions produce the expected results.
  • Control cost of repairs and maintenance and eliminate wastage of resources to ensure budget deviations are managed
  • Ensure correct application of existing and new production technology to effect improvements in the results expected.
  • Ensure health and safety measures are observed within the section.
  • Carry out any other activities as may be required of you by the management.
  • Ensure spray operators shower daily after session of spray.
  • Ensure you and your teams participate in activities fully and scores
  • Above 80% on weekly audits.

About the M- Lab: The Lab is our think-and-do tank. A space to micro-simulate projects, extract data, evaluate projects and conduct surveys. 

Simply, this is where we test systems and behaviors that cannot be implemented without being examined in detail. 

We have conducted extensive surveys on user experiences using mobile payment systems for health in many different settings, we have carried out surveys on the effects on donor incentives on health care access and health insurance. 


The Lab designs tests, trains participants and conducts quantitative and qualitative data collection. 

Currently we have around 20 different tests ideas for a number of different partners.
We would like to apply the use of the mobile wallet technology on other sectors such as agriculture and education.
 
For this reason we are currently looking for a highly motivated and pro-active individual with a background in the agricultural sector.
 
M- Lab Field Coordinator Job Purpose: Reporting to the Lab Manager and Team Leader, the Lab Field Coordinator is responsible for the formulation and implementation of Lab Tests in the agricultural sector.
 
M- Lab Field Coordinator Job Duties:
  • Conceptualize new test models of how the mobile wallet can be of use in the agriculture value chain. Can mobile wallet technology be used to connect buyers and sellers or donors and beneficiaries along the agricultural value chain?
  • Approach actors in the value chain and market proposed models
  • Recruitment and training actors in the value chain, field agents and any other identified stakeholder so as to implement the proposed model.
  • Work with management in determining research budgets and schedules.
  • Support with the development of research and data-collection instruments and carry out pilots.
  • Receive, resolve and/or revert complaints from the various actors to the Lab Manager and Team Leader.
  • Pro-actively detect problems and opportunities and find solutions to different issues related to the lab projects and maintain documentation for reference purposes. In addition, track test progress and correct any deviations and delays. 
  • Identify foreign partners who Dodore can engage with so as to scale up the projects.
  • Internally test mobile technology and mobile payment systems and identify potential problems for end users of these systems.
  • Writing of concept notes and reports.
  • Make logistic arrangements in carrying out of internal and external Lab meetings and actively participate in these meetings.
  • Assist in other tasks that may be assigned by the M- Lab Manager or Team Leader.
Requirements:
  • Recently obtained or about to complete a Master’s degree in an agriculture related subject or rural development
  • At least one year of demonstrated experience in designing, and implementing research projects, preferably agricultural related projects.
  • Proven experience in supervising teams on the ground, both motivating and mentoring as well as monitoring.
  • Proven experience in writing of concepts and reports.
  • Ability to carry out data entry and analysis using SPSS and excel will be an added advantage.
  • Pro-active attitude and be able to think outside of the box.
  • Willingness to work in informal settlements and occasional travel to (rural)Areas in other parts of the country.
  • Kenyan Nationals only.
Gross Salary: 50,000- 70,000 Ksh/month 
 
This gross salary is dependent on one’s level of expertise. 
 
The gross salary is subject to statutory deductions i.e. PAYE, NSSF, NHIF)

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture works to reduce hunger and poverty, and improve human nutrition in the tropics through research aimed at increasing the eco-efficiency of agriculture. 

CIAT is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food secure future. 

The Center’s research focuses on increasing productivity of key crops (cassava, common bean, rice, and tropical forages), reversing soil and land degradation, and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate change and environmental management. 

 
Headquartered near Cali, Colombia, CIAT has regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Hanoi, Vietnam, with staff posted in other developing countries as well.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture will face a combination of high population growth, rapidly degrading farmland, and emerging climate change impacts. 

CIAT’s strategic research on crops (common bean, cassava, tropical forages, and rice), soils, and policy analysis will feed into major initiatives aimed at bolstering food and nutrition security, restoring landscapes to ecological health, and fostering economic growth, based on a sustainable and climate-smart agriculture.

The Position: The Regional Director is responsible for establishing a vision and strategy for CIAT’s pan-Africa research program. 

The regional program consists of a diverse portfolio of projects and team members active in 30 different countries across the region.

This position is responsible for building a coherent regional program that delivers innovative science, working through diverse partnerships to deliver agricultural development impact. 

Specifically, the position focuses on fund raising (donor intelligence, donor engagement, proposal development, and stewardship / communications), development of partnerships (identification, implementation and monitoring) and enablement of a conducive atmosphere across the team to deliver program objectives. 

This position is part of CIAT’s executive team and interacts strongly with Research Programs and Headquarter operations.  

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of country and regional strategies and resource mobilization efforts to ensure that research contributes to the achievements of development outcomes
  • Strategically position CIAT in the region and ensure integrity and alignment among CIAT’s activities
  • Build and maintain active relationship with partners and donors in the region and work with Research Area Directors, the Head of Partnerships & Communications, and other CIAT colleagues to ensure the development and maintenance of a strong funding pipeline
  • Build strong relationships with research and development partners (public and private) and identify opportunities for collaborative research
  • Implement Sub-Saharan Africa annual business plan and guarantee goals accomplishment
  • Coordinate work of CIAT in the region and provide oversight and management of research teams and administrative staff
  • Liaise and collaborate with the other administrative areas in the organization (Finance & Administration, Human Resources) as appropriate for financial oversight and management of the projects
  • Be a member of CIAT’s Management Team and contribute to effective leadership and decision making
  • Represent CIAT at national, regional and international events and meetings

Education and Experience

  • Proven ability to build partnerships and raise funds for research programs, and to communicate the impact of donor investments throughout the project lifecycle
  • Possess established donor networks and awareness of donor priorities in the region
  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in English and other local languages desired, and ability to influence a variety of audiences, including policy makers
  • Experience in leading and managing a multi-disciplinary and dynamic team of researchers and development practitioners, and the associated human resource and financial management
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally and regionally
Terms of employment: This is an International position and will be based at CIAT regional headquarters in Nairobi, Africa and reporting directly to the Director General. 

The initial contract will be for up to three (3) years, subject to a probation period of six (6) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
