Working under the guidance and supervision of the Clinical Services Manager the medical officer will specifically be responsible for:
  • Overall responsible for the daily clinical assessment and prescription of treatment for all patients attending the main camp hospital.
  • Refer acute and chronic cases to the special clinics accordingly.
  • Organize with fellow Doctors weekly work and day off schedule to ensure that weekends are properly covered.
  • Identifying and coordinating referral of patients to secondary and tertiary facilities in liaison with the Clinical Services Manager.
  • Conduct and supervise the daily morning ward rounds in the hospital.
  • Ensure that all assessments and treatment provided are properly documented on patients files
  • Maintain an accurate and updated records keeping system at the hospital keeping in mind that any significant changes seen with regards to cases seen at the facility should be reported to the Clinical Services Manager and other relevant authorities.
  • Admit patients to the wards when necessary.
  • Attend the weekly hospital staff meeting and the weekly Quality of Care Committee.
  • Carry out small surgical procedures at the hospital.
  • Attend to emergencies in ward.
  • Develop clinical protocols and procedures in line with current WHO/MOH and for OJT and theory sessions i.e. during CME’s, round and clinics.
  • Training of staff on job and theory sessions.
  • Monitor and provide on-going in service training of national and refugee clinical staff.
  • Provide health talks to patients/clients on day-to-day basis during their review.
  • Improve patient records in line with the reporting system.
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to the drug management system processes by all hospital staff in collaboration with the pharmacist e.g. rational prescription by M.A’s and clinicians.
  • Carry out other relevant duties as may be required as may be assigned by supervisor
Key Result Areas:
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to the rest of the clinical team at the hospital.
  • Ensure timely and quality health care services to refugees.
  • Overall responsible for the daily clinical assessment and prescription of treatment for all patients attending the main camp hospital.
Required Qualifications:
  • Medical doctor registered with the Kenya Medical and Dentists Practitioners Board
  • More than two years experience in a busy hospital setting.
Required Experience & Competencies:
  • Excellent clinical and surgical skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Computer literate
  • Good team player
  • Ability to work in hardship areas
  • Experience working with a non-profit humanitarian organization
  • Fluency in Turkana/Somali language will be an added advantage.

  • A holder of Bachelors of Science degree in Environment, Occupational Health & Safety or Food Science and Technology or related field
  • Post- Graduate qualification in Occupational Health & Safety will be an added advantage
  • An understanding of managing ISO series programs is a basic requirement
  • Knowledge of The Coca-Cola Management Systems is an added advantage
  • At least three years working experience in busy manufacturing industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal Skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Highly developed report writing skills and should be computer literate.

Currently MSF is working in 8 different regions in South-Central Somalia and is interested to contract an experienced advanced life support doctor to do medical evacuations for our international staff in case of medical emergencies.
 
Duties:
 
The doctor will be responsible for performing the following tasks:
  • Advice on the type of drugs, material and equipment required for medical evacuation depending on the case involved.
  • Help in the organization and preparation of evacuating the patient(s) to either Nairobi Hospital or the Aga-Khan University Hospital in Nairobi
  • Assess patient(s) on the ground and decide on aptitude of patient(s) to fly
  • Stabilization of patient(s) before flight.
  • Offer in flight care to patient(s) as condition of patient demands.
  • Hand over of patient(s) to the referral hospital with all the patients notes
  • Write a summary of the procedures done on patient before arrival to hospital.
  • Regular feedback to the medical coordinator involved during the evacuation.
Skills required
  • Medical Doctor specialized in anesthesia and/or advanced life support.
  • Registered with the medical and dentists practitioners’ board.
Other requirements:
  • Based in Nairobi
  • Valid travel documents to Somalia.
  • Ready to leave at any time when security has been cleared by MSF.
  • Practice rights in Aga-Khan University and Nairobi hospitals will be an added advantage.
Type of Contract
 
This is not a full time job. 
The selected candidate will be required to fly to Somalia on demand as this is only for emergencies and will be paid only in case of evacuation with a lump sum.
 
Location
 
Agreement to be signed in Nairobi, doctor to be based in Nairobi. 
Evacuations will be conducted from Somalia to Nairobi.
